Giveaway: Enter to Win Our Last Bag of Licorice Snaps!

June 15, 2018 by

Black licorice. When it comes to candy, this may be one of the most polarizing topics out there. Licorice haters may always hate, but licorice lovers are some of the most die-hard fans we know. So if you love licorice, then you already know that Licorice Snaps were a household name for generations.

Licorice Snaps: The Holy Grail of Licorice

Licorice Snaps

In 1914, Martin Kretchmer founded the American Licorice Company in Chicago, Illinois. Back then, Black Licorice Twists were the focus, and when those caught on, the company began to expand their offerings. It wasn’t until the 1930’s, however, when The Original Snaps Chewy Classic Candy came onto the scene. This treat, with its chewy licorice center and pastel-colored candy coating, soon became a cult favorite amongst licorice lovers, nationwide.

Through the years, The Original Snaps Chewy Classic Candy offered countless moments of joy to candy lovers young and old alike. But, in recent years, the candy was discontinued, leaving many a licorice connoisseur to get their fix elsewhere. We are always sorry to see the end of a retro candy, especially one as iconic as The Original Snaps.

But then, we stumbled across something wonderful in our midst: one bag of The Original Snaps Chewy Classic Candy.

How this single gem escaped us before, we aren’t certain. But, we’ve decided to host a giveaway for our last remaining bag of Snaps. After all, it could be the last bag left in the country, so it only seems right to send it off with a bang.

I love (black) licorice! More than 50-years-ago, I would walk about a half-mile to buy licorice for a penny. My parents loved licorice, too. I would love to win this bag of Licorice Snaps! Thank you 🙂

MY MOTHER AND DAD OWNED A SMALL NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORE WHEN I WAS GROWING UP. MY DAD USED TO GIVE ME A BAG OF SNAPS AT LUNCH TIME SOME DAYS, I WOULD TAKE THEM BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER LUNCH AT HOME, WE LIVED 4 BLOCKS AWAY FROM MY SCHOOL. I WOULD SHARE WITH MY FRIENDS, AND THEY CALLED ME THE CANDY MAN. I STILL TALK T0 A FEW OF THOES KIDS AND THEY STILL REMEMBER THOES DAYS AT SCHOOL. I DESERVE THE LAST BAG , AS I AM 76 YEARS OLD AND LOVE THE SNAPS TO THIS DAY. I WOULD BUY THEM ANY TIME BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY WHEN I TRY TO ORDER THEM AGAIN. I LOVE THEM,ALL MY LIFE.

I love Licorice Snaps. It was the only thing I wanted for my Birthday, Father’s Day, and Christmas. My Son used to find them at a candy store in Arundel Mills Shopping Center and get me 5 lbs of them. I also used to purchase them at a candy store at the Potomac Mills Shopping Center. I have not been able to find them for the last couple of years and have been eating the “filled” Licorice Snaps. When I worked for Government (I retired 4 years ago), I used to keep a large jar of them on my desk for eating all day long. Its funny because you have to develop a taste for them. My coworkers would come over and I would offer them a licorice snap and they would eat just one and never ask me again. I didn’t mind because no one raided my snacks. I have loved them since I was a kid and would really, really, really appreciate and savor the last bag of licorice snaps.

I bought 2 bags of snaps for my brother-in-law who loves licorice and especially Snaps. He said it the best Christmas present he could get.

when are 3 kids were young 2 boys 1 girl my oldest son about 6-7 years old, the three would lay on the floor watching tv. Steve the oldest would hide snaps in his socks and when the time was right he would sneak one out and eat it, boy got away with this for some time before the other two caught him,

    good memories…

It’s the first candy my parents bought me as a kid. Knowing how much I liked them (at that time they were in a box) my dad bought me 12 boxes (one a month) for the time he was in Korea. I really hate they aren’t producing them anymore

Because we are old licorice lovers, we will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary this year and we love licorice. We love each other too.

I am 79 years old and have enjoyed SNAPS ever since I was a young child. One thing I always did before eating a SNAP was to blow through the SNAP seeing what appeared to be a “puff of smoke” come out the other end. People would always ask “what I was doing.”

I thought I was hoarding the last bag of Snaps! Both my brother and I have been Snap fanatics since the 1950’s. This last week my brother and I went on a racing vacation to Pennsylvania. I broke out what I thought was the last bag of Snaps on Earth. My brother went through those Snaps like Grant through Richmond! He ate them all, the pig. They are all gone. You must see that I am in desperate need of a bag of Snaps

i remember being able to enjoy Snaps in front of all my friends, because I was the only one who enjoyed not only the black licorice taste, but the thin candy coating flavors. Popping a Snap, two or three in my
mouth and chomping down with a bit of a collapse, thus the Snap! Yummo. I can close my eyes and remember those days. As I recall, the package was entirely too small for me. Would love to once again crunch those hollowed out marvels between my teeth.

I often wondered why my favorite candy was called snaps because often they did not “snap”. This bestest ever licorice candy needs to be in my mouth again. If only I knew how to make this wonderful treat!

I have always bought Snaps since I was a child they have been my favorite candy. Buying all the bags I could find at Walgreen’s or any other grocery or candy vendor I could find. My husband never could understand why I ate or like snaps so much, but I have eaten them forever as long as I can remember and I will be 65 yrs of age of the 1st of July and it would be wonderful to purchase a bag.

I was 3 the first time I had black licorice. It was the first candy I ever had. I would always get so excited when my mom would buy a bag. My mom and I would sit on the porch swing and eat the licorice while watching the dogs play in the yard. Even today 40+ yrs later. Ever time my mom comes to visit. She brings a bag of black licorice for us to share.
My mom and I have had all different kinds of black licorice candy. Except for licorice “SNAPS”. I hadn’t even heard of them until your post mentioning them. I would love to win this last bag to share with my mom. So I can make a new memory of sharing a new black licorice candy with my mom.

Love this licorice and still crave the licorice snaps!! Please keep me updated as to the status of a possible comeback for this candy favorite for so many of us. I have bought these through a few candy distributors in years past, and was so disappointed when they discontinued the product. Here’s hoping it makes a comeback soon!

My earliest memory of eating licorice Snaps was when I was four years old; my grandmother and my mother had taken me shopping in Baltimore; it was an overcast day and I was wearing my favorite dress which was gray with a grid of multiple colors of embroidered squares on the bodice; we were going to Montgomery Ward in Baltimore which was a multi story building; I remember eating the snaps as we shopped; Later they took me to a hobby store and bought me a drawing set. I am now 70 years old and licorice Snaps are my favorite candy and I think eating them was why I remember that day so well. I don’t understand why American Licorice discontinued a popular candy (although eating licorice at all is somewhat of a cult!)

I would like to get the last bag of black licorice snaps because , When I was 8 me and My best friend summer who was the same age as me had a game that we made up, it was called licorice toss , you each get 100 pieces apiece and you toss the candy into each others bucket standing 4 feet across from each other, and the one with the most gets all the candy in both buckets, we loved the game so much we always had licorice. My best friend summer was killed at age 11 by a drive by shooting when we were walking to the market to get more licorice and snacking on the bag of black licorice we had. My best friend and I loved black licorice so much,it was the last thing we ate together before she passed away. I would like to see her burial site on her birthday to eat some black licorice with her.
