Break Toffee Norms With Brach’s Assorted Coffee Toffee Special Treasures May 3, 2010

Brachs Assorted Coffee Toffee Special Treasures come in a myriad of unusual flavors! Sharability: 10 Denture Danger: 10 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 6 Overall: 8 Once again, Brach’s goes versatile with the flavors in the Assorted Coffee Special Treasures, hard toffees flavored with only the classiest of flavors including amaretto, Suisse mocha, French vanilla and Irish cream. Each flavor has a corresponding wrapper and color to do with the interesting and unique flavors. Resisting the temptation to chew these candies is impressive and unless you can be in that minority, you will have trouble avoiding large chunks of toffee from being...

Gary Duschl and the Worlds Longest Chewing Gum Wrapper

An interview with Gary Duschl about the Worlds Longest Wrigleys Chewing Gum Wrapper Chain April 22, 2010

The other day, I had the good fortune to communicate with Gary Duschl who holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the LONGEST chain made out of gum wrappers. I asked Gary if he would share his experience with the readers of our candy blog and below is an excerpt from his reply. I find project amazing on many levels, both physically and metaphorically, and it is one of the more interesting uses for recycling candy/gum wrappers - Jon H.Prince, President, CandyFavorites.com I started the gum wrapper chain on March 11, 1965 while a student in the ninth grade....

Brachs Butterscotch Disks

Brach’s Butterscotch Raises the Beauty of Simplicity Bar a Notch April 19, 2010

Brach's Butterscotch Disks are the standard by which all Butterscotch Disks are measured.... Sharability: 10 Denture Danger: 8 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 8 Overall: 9 These simple little classic disc candies are one of the best. The butterscotch flavor just hits the spot no matter what mood you might be in. Butterscotch is a color, and a flavor, and yours truly, a candy. Butterscotch’s base ingredients are brown sugar and butter; corn syrup, vanilla, salt, and cream are usually added to the concoction to create the deliciousness that this candy so well exemplifies. It is made similarly to toffee, but the...

Brachs Milk Maid Caramel Royals have been a candy favorite for many years!

Brachs Milk Maid Royals: Pick a Flavor April 15, 2010

Brachs Milk Maid Caramel Royals have been one of the most popular Brach's Candies for many years and their unique flavors continue to delight candy lovers to this very day! Sharability: 10 Denture Danger: 9 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 6 Overall: 7 Each one of these chewy caramel Milk Maid Royals is filled with a different flavor of sweetness. Fruity, pink raspberry, which is great considering I normally hate fruit flavored candies. Alcoholic, orangey butter rum, pumpin’ a kick into the candy. Orange orange, pulls the creamsicle into the caramel. Sweet maple makes the sweet even sweeter. Soothing white vanilla spins...

A rare box of Raisinets circa 1960

The Somewhat Healthy Side of Candy: Raisinets April 12, 2010

Raisinets have been around for quite some time and this box of chocolate covered raisins is from the late 1960's when the brand was owned by Ward Candy Company Sharability: 8 Denture Danger: 6 Convenience: 7 Novelty: 9 Overall: 9 California raisins, Nestlé milk chocolate, melty, chewy, sweet, fruity, Raisinets are a classic concession candy. They are great for movies because you can make them last a long time by chewing and enjoying each one individually (and even letting some of your friends munch down a couple), and they are a silent candy and therefore won’t distract you from the...

The Cool Kidz try a variety of licorice candies and share their humble opinions|The Cool Kidz taste different forms of red licorice

The Cool Kidz like Licorice in all shapes and sizes... April 7, 2010

The Cool Kidz share their opinions about different type of red licorice including licorice straws and licorice laces This week we tried red twists and red laces. These are both delicious licorice candies. The red licorice twists, often packaged as Twizlers, are very easy to be found and come in a variety of sizes. They are classics, and very addictive. In our opinion, they are best used as straws: if the top and bottom ends are bitten off the twist can be put into any drink you desire. Overall, these red chewy candies are satisfying. On the other hand, red...

A vintage Heath Bar Advertisement from the 1960's

Heath Bar, Not Quite a Health Bar April 6, 2010

A rare vintage Heath Bar Wrapper from the 1960's when the candy was being distributed by the now defunct CB Heath & Sons in Illinois Sharability: 2 Denture Danger: 8 Convenience: 6 Novelty: 8 Overall: 9 Heath bar… a delightfully sweet and cruncharific candy bar. Super sweet English toffee with a hint of almonds coated in milk chocolate for the candy that will demand you to finish it. Toffee is toffee and toffee will get stuck in your teeth, but it won’t stop you from enjoying every sugary mouth watering bite of this thin candy bar. In 1914 L.S. Heath...

An M&M's Candy ad from the 1970's

Munchin' on Military M&Ms and Peanut M&Ms April 1, 2010

We stumbled upon this retro candy advertisement for M&M's from the 1970's. Sharability: 8 Denture Danger: 4 Convenience: 7 Novelty: 9 Overall: 9 Mars company manufactures the M&M, which is milk chocolate, covered in a hard candy shell, but you know that. What you might not know is where the idea for M&Ms originated. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s Forrest Mars Sr. saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets surrounded by a hard shell as to prevent them from melting. Mars took this genius idea and patented his own version in 1941. During World War II M&Ms were sold...

C Howards (or, as some call it, Chowards) has just released a quiry new Guava Flavored Candy to compliment classics such as Violet Mints

A bit about Chowards Candy and the new Guava Mints March 25, 2010

C Howards (or, as some call it, Chowards) has just released a quiry new Guava Flavored Candy to compliment classics such as Violet Mints One of the older retro candy stalwarts, C. Howard Company Inc. was started by Charles Howard of New York City in the early 1930s . Mr. Howard, in search of a "uniqueand different flavored candy," concocted a delightful confectionery mint called "Choward's Violet" in a small industrial loft on Broadway. Howard's first retailing experience was selling "Choward's Violet" on the street corners of Manhattan, where the product's reputation grew. On the heels of "Choward's Violet" success,...

If you are looking for a Fruit Jel that is colorful, soft and tasty, look no further.... Sharability: 9 Denture Danger: 9 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 5 Overall: 8 Don’t get this candy confused with Sunkist fruit gems, because though the two soft sugarcoated gelatin cylinders look almost identical these discs have a much better flavor-consistency combination making the eating of them almost more enjoyable than throwing them. These fruit discs can be considered a generic version of the Sunkist Fruit Gems, so lucky for you, a cheaper and better tasting gelatin cylinder athoguh these are not marked as being Kosher....

Brach’s Chocolate Covered Raisins and Almonds, and Double Dipped Peanuts, Oh My March 18, 2010

Brach's Chocolate Covered Candies are the benchmark by which great candies are measured! Sharability: 7 Denture Danger: 5 Convenience: 6 Novelty: 4 Overall: 9 Brach’s doesn’t dip their peanuts in chocolate once; they make sure you get the perfect ratio, the perfect chocolate smothered peanut. This little blob of chocolate sits flat on the table and does quite the job at hiding what might lie inside. It could be a raisin or a macadamia nut, or a pebble, but Brach’s chooses best and puts the peanut in its place. hence why it is hailed as the best Chocolate Covered Peanut!...

Brachs Special Treasures Butter Toffee and Chocolate Butter Toffee Aren’t as Similar as You Might Think March 15, 2010

Brach’s Butter Toffee and Chocolate Butter Toffee Aren’t as Similar as You Might Think Sharability: 8 Denture Danger: 8 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 6 Overall: 7 Upon seeing these two candies all wrapped up in their metallic gold wrappers I assumed them to be virtually the same, one being chocolate and the other being the plain butter toffee. But you know what they say about assumptions… and I should have known. Though similar in name these candies have a longer list of differences than they do similarities. The pure Brach's Golden Treasures Butter Toffee candies are manufactured in a perfect, consistent...

Ce De Smarties: Eat, Share or Smoke them, Big, Sour, or Small March 3, 2010

Smarties: Eat, Share or Smoke them, Big, Sour, of Small Sharability: 10 Denture Danger: 2 Convenience: 10 Novelty: 9 Overall: 10 At this day and age people will find a way to smoke anything and believe it or not but Smarties candies are among the smokables. I could say that this feat is simple and clean, but it is a bit more trouble than it is worth. The goal is to crush up the Smarties inside the wrapper and then open both ends of the wrapper. This is when you can inhale through one end and have Smartie dust come...

Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes , a Valiant Effort March 3, 2010

We are sad to report that these delicious candies were permanently DISCONTINUED as of June 2012 Sharability: 8 Denture Danger: 7 Convenience: 9 Novelty: 5 Overall: 7 This one is for those who are coco for coconut. This sticky brick of candy incorporates the three colors and an attempt at the three classic sundae flavors, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Striped brown, white, and pink this Sundae, though clever with the name, is not more than a colorful coconut block. I’m not complaining about it by any means, but I don’t want you to be misled into thinking that this was...

Sixlets: The Bold and the Beautiful March 1, 2010

Although we tend to favor retro candy advertisements or wrappers, we couldn't resist this cute Sixlets candy logo from Sweetworks Sharability: 5 Denture Danger: 3 Convenience: 8 Novelty: 6 Overall: 8 Sixlets are, without a doubt, one of those childhood favorites. I used to love getting a tube and eating the little balls by putting the wrapper in my mouth and sliding the ball out with my teeth. Add a Little Color to Easter With Brach’s Pastel Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs February 26, 2010

It would be hard to imagine Easter or an Easter Basket without Brach's Fiesta Malt Eggs Sharability: 8 Denture Danger: 5 Convenience: 7 Novelty: 8 Overall: 8 Sweet, almost too sweet, cruncharific, colorful, malty, chocolatey, candy covered, (but mostly malty); these Brach’s Pastel Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs are perfect for the Easter Fiesta. These eggs are a malted mouthful and they are made with “Real Milk Chocolate.” (I sure hope it’s real! I didn’t realize candy companies had to inform the consumer that we were purchasing real chocolate; I would only assume that a chocolate candy being made from real...

The Candy Blog Rating System Uncovered February 24, 2010

Becca Droz shares with us the logic nd the ratings system on our Candy Blog So I have been using this self-created rating system for every candy I have blogged about and I realized I never really explained what each category really means. I apologize. Please, let me clear things up for you. Sharability refers to how easy the candy is to share. A low sharability is earned either by an extremely tasty candy that you wouldn’t want to share or a candy that is just difficult to share such as a lollypop. Denture Danger rates a candy on how...

Peeps: Milk Chocolate Covered Marshmallow, Not to Be Confused With Chocolate Covered Peeps February 22, 2010

Chocolate Covered Peeps are available in Dark or Milk Chocolate and add a new twist to an old classic... Sharability: 1 Denture Danger: 5 Convenience: 8 Novelty: 8 Overall: 9 This is quite an interesting new twist on the classic Easter candy, Peeps. This individually wrapped peep is crunchy, this peep is gooey, this peep is a taste treat. Maybe it is just because of the contrasting crunchy chocolate, but the marshmallow inside the milk chocolate casing seems gooyer than that of a normal peep making it taste like a coconutless mallowcup. Ehem, allow me clarify, this is not a...

Go Nuts For Brach’s Jelly Nougats February 19, 2010

Brach's Jelly Nougats were discontinued in 2011 Sharability: 6 Denture Danger: 8 Convenience: 8 Novelty: 4 Overall: 7 Jelly Nougats. They don’t have the most appealing name, but this white nougat with multicolored jelly pieces within it might surprise you in what’s most important, it’s taste. Each color of jelly candy adds a unique flavor and texture to the sweet base nougat flavor. I don’t understand how this chewy gummy candy can be called the same thing as the fluffy chocolate inside of a Milky Way, but I guess a nougat can be made more than one way. And indeed...

Juju Hearts are a fun candy for Valentine's Day and may be infused with magical powers... Sharability: 10 Denture Danger: 8 Convenience: 8 Novelty: 8 Overall: 7 Ju Ju Hearts are another great Valentine’s Day candy. Upon seeing the bag of red scrumptious squishy hearts I assumed they would be cinnamon flavored. Though these hearts would probably be better with the cinnamon spice tongue tingler, the cherry flavor that lies within the Ju Ju Heart is far from terrible. It has a similar flavor to the red jolly rancher, but it isn’t too sweet or medicinal tasting, which many cherry...

Altoids make a break from their illustrious past September 16, 2006

On CandyFavorites, our description for Altoids reads: "Altoids are one of the oldest breath mints and are still made from the same formula that dates back to the reign of England's King George". Unfortunately this is no long true as the formula was changed in April this year when they substituted 'corn syrup' with 'glucose syrup' and 'artificial flavor'...and as a result they don't taste quite the same, at least to us seasoned Altoids customers. I'm sure they have their reasons for making this change, just as Coca-Cola did at the end of the 1980's when they took the original...

Everybody Loves Pez June 24, 2006

Pez was probably my favorite candy growing up. There were so many cool dispensers and the pez just tasted so good. Plus it was pretty neat eating candy out of something's neck. My parents usually got me pez at each holiday. I always had a Santa or Rudolph dispenser at Christmas, and a bunny at Easter. Sometimes if my parents were feeling generous they would come home with a cool character for me and my sister. We used to trade different characters all the time. But pez isn't just for kids. Sure parents don't go around buying their own pez...

Bacherlorette Fun April 25, 2006

At every bachelorette party, the gag gifts are inevitable. In fact, it's usually one of the best parts, besides that fireman stripper of course. Well I have found what is probably the most useful (not to mention yummy) gag gift. It's the penis candy necklace. It's pretty much the same as a regular candy necklace, but instead of the little circles, you get penises. Now of course there are usually some sort of penis gag gifts in the bags already. But normally they don't taste this good! Which is why they are the most useful gag gift. Of course...

Cadbury Creme Eggs Love April 4, 2006

I knew there was a reason I loved March and April. It's not the promise of spring, or the knowledge that my classes are almost over. It's Cadbury Creme Eggs. I absolutely love them. During the months they are available everywhere I make sure to have at least two boxes in the house at all times. Now there are a lot of different Cadbury eggs. They have caramel and chocolate filled. But I love the original creme. Milk chocolate on the outside, and the white and yellow sugary creme on the inside. I think if I had to pick only...

Chocolate Covered Anything March 25, 2006

As most of you can probably tell, I love chocolate. And by love I mean I would marry it if marriage to an edible object was ever made legal. There are just so manys kinds of chocolate. Dark chocolate, white chocolate, and my personal favorite, milk chocolate. But I try not to discriminate, as all chocolate is wonderful. So it has recently come to my attention that almost anything covered in chocolate is better than the thing itself. I mean pretzels are great, but so much better when chocolate covered. Raisons are ok, but put them in chocolate and...

My Favorite Flavor March 21, 2006

One of my favorite things about candy in the whole world is something that goes on in your head, something that only works when you're eating candy. It has to do with perception of flavor. What's this you ask? Is the Candy Critic using big words? You better believe it. You see I love cherries; I could eat a hundred of them. I'll eat so many cherries that many parts of my body protests and violently disagree with the amount of cherries I've consumed and really let me know it. The thing is I love cherry flavored candies too. When...

Candy May Be Dandy... March 17, 2006

I always feel like when I write a blog for the Candyblog that I'm complaining, maybe I just use this place to vent. Well today is really going to be no different. Whenever I tell people that I'm the Candy Critic they always ask if I do chocolate too. I think chocolate is candy so, yes I do. I tell them that I also do chips and the occasional cookie as well. Then most people tell me that those aren't candy at all. Well I'm here to tell you that these people are probably right, by definition. But I started...

Sugar Rush February 24, 2006

There is nothing like a complete sugar rush. I'll admit, it's been a while. Getting a sugar rush usually relates with being a kid, but I think adults could so with a sugar rush every so often too! So what is the best candy for a sugar rush you ask? It's something that you probably ate as a kid. They aren't as popular now what with all the new fangled sugar candy around. But as they say, oldies are goodies! It's all about the Pixy Stix! There's nothing better than ripping off the top and pouring all that flavored sugar...

It's so sour it'll make me cry February 21, 2006

One of the trends in the candy world that really came out of the 80s is the super sour. For years every candy company in the world has been looking for a way to make me cry. I have to say some have made it for me, I've cried more from eating some sour concoctions than I did at the end of old Yeller. It's a strange sensation too, that feeling that every muscle in your mouth is contracting in such a way that you can't move your tongue. The worst part of it is when your eyes start to...

Through the Hard Times February 7, 2006

Hello candy lovers! I have to apologize for the lack of updates. I had some technical difficulties for the past week, and by technical difficulties I mean evil computer viruses. They left me internetless for a week! On average I spend about 75% of my day online. So this was a big blow for me. I needed some comfort. So what did I do? I turned to candy of course. An old friend that helped me make it through the tough times. Yes those miniature Reeses cups were there for me. With their sweet chocolate outer layer, and creamy peanut...

chocoalte-pretzels-are-a-Blast From My Past January 26, 2006

Chocolate pretzels. How I have missed them! On my trip to the warehouse last week, they were one of the items I picked up. When I think about chocolate pretzels, I am immediately brought back to my years in middle school. Those awkward years where most of us had braces and hadn't yet grown into our bodies, were made better by chocolate pretzels. After a long day of school, I would always go straight to the vending machine for a bag of chocolate pretzels. It was my little reward for making it through the day. And of course the...

Candy Heaven: My Trip to the Warehouse January 19, 2006

Yes candy lovers, that's right! I got to visit the warehouse where all the wonderful candy is received, stored, packaged, and then sent out into the world. It all started Monday morning. Since I didn't have any classes to attend, it was a good day to go. When I first walked in, I met all of the very lovely women who work there answering phones and putting data into the computers. Then we went into the first room. On the right were tables filled with packages ready to be sent out. To the left was the first of many larges...

The Reality of Candy January 16, 2006

I just finished trying an interesting snack, I took a look at the package and it said contains real and artificial ingredients. Now I've talked about this about 100 times on Candy Critic, for the most part I don't mind the idea of artificial flavors in candy. In fact I'm a big fan of some of the artificial flavors out in the world. I'm able to make the distinction in my mind that when a package says cherry flavored it might not really taste like cherries. The part that gets me thought is those treats that say they have both....

Remembering the Simple Things January 9, 2006

I always loved Candy Buttons as a kid. The pink, yellow, and blue little drops of sugar on paper. They tasted great and always gave you energy! Plus they were small, so you could get away with eating a lot of them. But as time passed I was introduced to new and exciting candy, and I forgot about the Candy Buttons. They were old-fashioned. This Christmas my three year old cousin came to visit. Among her gifts of Disney Princesses and videos, my mom put in a package of Candy Buttons. My cousin was so excited! She had some before...

The Search Continues January 5, 2006

One of the things people assume is that the Candy Critic knows all. Well maybe not all but they assume I know of every candy ever made and that's just not possible. Most people don't really get the chance to live in many places, or even shop in that many places. When you travel often you stay in resorts or tourist areas that cater to the idea that people like snacks from their own country. Rarely do people take the time to look into a local grocery store for snacks, nor do I blame them either. I mean if I'm...

New Year? New Candy.... January 1, 2006

Smores: Do It Right December 15, 2005

My roommates and I have a weekly tradition. Every week when we go grocery shopping, we buy a bag of chocolate to eat for the week. Last week, my roommate got miniature Hershey Smores bars. We finished the bag off in a week, and we of course enjoyed them thoroughly. But I decided that they just couldn't compare to REAL smores. You know, a graham cracker bottom, a piece of a...

Giving Candy The Business December 15, 2005

So I've been at this whole "Candy Critic" thing for a few years now and I've put a whole lot into it. One of my travels took me to the National Candy Expo in Chicago, don't even try and go because you have to be invited. But it does exist, a convention completelly dedicated to the love of candy, or so thought. You see the candy industry is a billion dollar machine; these fun little snacks we eat are...

There were about 20 of us that went, and we each had to carry 30 pounds of food in our backpacks. There was no room for candy or chocolate. I spent the majority of the summer working with AIDS orphans....

The Definition of Candy November 28, 2005

One of the biggest complaints I get about candy critic is people calling something that I review not candy. Chips are the biggest complaint, people tell me all the time that I shouldn't review chips or salty snacks. I don't know about that, I think chips are candy; the national confectioners association has chips at their All Candy Expo. I say chips are candy, just because it's not sweet doesn't make it not candy. People have to open their minds a little and realize that just because it's not a lollypop or a mint, it's still candy. If you where...

The Lost Holiday November 27, 2005

Candy is a staple of holidays. Of course Halloween being the biggest. But then there is also tons of candy around for Christmas, Easter and the 4th of July. So why is it that there isn't Thanksgiving candy? Everyone always talks about the turkey, the potatoes, the cranberry sauce, the stuffing, and the pumpkin pies. But what about candy? Thanksgiving is unfortunately stuck between Halloween and Christmas. I guess people thought the Halloween candy could hold them over until Christmas. But personally, I don't think its fair. Thanksgiving is a great holiday, and it should get attention from the candy...

What You Can Learn From Candy November 22, 2005

At Rochester Institute of Technology you would assume all the learning happens in the confines of the classroom or the computer lab. But for Halloween, the Residence Life and Student Health Center staff decided to bring the education directly to the students in their residence hall rooms and apartments. We used candy and some catchy names to educate our students about Sexually Transmitted Infections (formally known as STD's or VD's). The staff dressed up in their costumes and went "reverse trick-or-treating" to each room and apartment delivering a bag of goodies. Each bag contained a statistics card with a picture...

What is the Candy Critic's Favorite Candy? November 17, 2005

What's new? People always ask me what my favorite candy is. It makes sense, having tried hundreds of different treats from all over the world and written about them I can understand why that's the most common question. The thing that isn't common is my answer. Sure I've got a top ten list on Candy Critic number one being Kit Kat, but is that really my favorite treat? No, what I crave is something different, something I've never tried before, it doesn't even have to taste that great, I just need a change. That's kind of how Candy Critic started;...

My grandma had a little shore house in Sea Isle. Once a year, my family would stay down there for a few days. I have a lot of memories from that shore house. But my favorite memory is the little convenience store that was...

Christmas is without a doubt my favorite holiday. I love the spirit of it all. So much love all around (ok not counting the family get togethers!). However, I'm not 100% sure how I feel about them. Yes of course they are always fun to wear and make faces with. I particularly enjoyed trying to kiss people with the big wax lips as a child.
