Farewell to Brach’s Neapolitan Sundaes

May 22, 2012 by

Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes are classic candies that imitate a Neapolitan ice cream sundae. They were among the original candies offered by Brach’s, and have always been made from real coconut.

We’re sad to report that Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes will be discontinued in June of 2012. We’ve got them in stock (and on sale!) so if these are your kryptonite, it’s time to place your order, warm up your time machine, and send some to your future self.

Outsmart Those Neapolitan Nabbers

Sure, some people just like coconut. But others among us have more important reasons for loving Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes.

You know how it goes. You nab a carton of neapolitan ice cream to enjoy the trifecta of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. Then while you slave away at work, your deadbeat roommate (or son, or husband) sneaks a scoop every few hours. Come quitting time, you wipe your brow and head home to the only reward that can lift your weary spirits. You open your freezer, lift the lid off the carton, and wail in disgust. Some nasty Neapolitan nabber has eaten all of one flavor.

Don’t let it happen to you! Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes are the only sure way to experience the trio of Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry — any time, anywhere, without a spoon.

Stock Up for Posterity

Finding these is about to go from difficult to impossible. So stock up now and hide them well. The only problem you’ll have then will be deciding whether to eat one flavor at a time or bite across the strips of color.

    Dearest Brach’s,
As a child these were one of my favorite treats. I never knew the name until recently when I was sad to discover that you have quit making them a year ago. Please, is there anyway to have a retro day and make them by accident or anywhere else to find these? I would be eternally grateful for any information leading to the purchase of these awesome candies, and I thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Amanda Vangalis

I am so disappointed that you are taking the Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundae off the market. I use to eat these with my grandmother when I was just a little girl. I was going to buy some and give them to my mother as a memory of deceased grandmother. This was going to be a fond memory of her. She use to keep these in the house all the time to give them to her children and grandchildren when they came over. Can we find a way to get those candy flavor back on the market? This would e just wonderful if we could. I would definitely buy a large supply to have on hand for the future. Thank you so much. Pleas do us a favor and try getting that particular bulk candy continued once again. It would be a big seller. That’s a promise. I guarantee.

I only learned the name of these recently, Ive been searching for yearrs like the holy grail for these candies, i mean all over. Now I find out today that they’re discontinuing them. In like 2012, So they’re probably all gone now. I feel like Another childhood friend I grew up with died without having a chance to say goodbye. These little candies were 1 of few and very far between good memories of a childhood that felt like an 18 year sentence in hell. I really feel like crying.

  • Reply skylar McCloud March 30, 2015 at 8:47 pm

dear robin, responce I know right. it had 4 layers at first. I loved the chewy caramel it was like the glue that brought it all together. even with that gone it was still great. 4 layers to 3 layers and now. No Layers. This is an atrosity

I’ve been searching all the candy stores for these treats. I finally decided to search online only to discover they have been discontinued. I’m so sad about this. Not only was it my favorite candy as a kid, I also have sweet childhood memories of the candies. My mom always bought some of Brach’s bulk candy when she could and I always picked these out as my favorite.

  • Reply Carol Smith April 27, 2015 at 10:45 am

I wondered why we couldn’t find them any where.
    BRING THEM BACK TO MARKET.
    To Ferrara Candy Company:
How crazy stupid that was for you to discontinue not only the Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes with Caramel, but the “plain” Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes.
The board members who made the decision to discontinue must have had there heads up to their shoulders ‘in a batch of chocolate’.
Maybe the current board members can pull their heads out and make a smarter decision. Don’t take candy from ‘baby boomers’. We grew up with these two candies and want them back…please, please, please.

  • Reply Trisha May 17, 2015 at 4:39 pm

Ugh…. I wanted my children to try these. I searched everywhere. My parents use to buy these and “try” to hide it from us (4kids)

  • Reply Brian July 11, 2015 at 6:53 pm

i don’t know why you discontinued making the Neapolitan coconut candies but i wish you would reconsider to me they are the first candies i remember getting from my grandmother when i was a child and the last candies she gave to my son 2 days before she passed away, they bring back good memories of sitting with my father and just getting a bag of Neapolitan candies to go play catch.I know they are just a piece of candy but they bring back so many good memories that mean so much but everything comes to a end so with that i just want to say thank you to all of the people who made the candy .

PLEASE….PLEASE….Bring these back!! These were my very favorite of all your Brach’s line. I would stock on up these as a child…(we could only go to the store on Sat.,)…so we had to make our candy last all week long. It was hard to do, but we tried. I can’t believe they have been taken off the market. I know there are so many still out there that want & will buy these again. I love the jelly nougat and the choc. and white swirled nougat as well. Those must have been taken off the market too because I can no longer find them. I promise you…the baby boomers will buy this candy…and there are a lot of baby boomers out there!

Coconut and coconut oil are at an all time popularity high. So are products free of wheat gluten, which I suspect the Neapolitans are. Were they egg free? I’m not sure, but it seems like the Neapolitans would sell pretty well as allergen free.

I can’t imagine that the world has run out of coconuts, so it’s possible that you’ve only misplaced the recipe. Since it seems a simple one, that most any simpleton could reproduce, perhaps someone will find it, and get busy.

Its even hard now to find the brachs brand chocolate stars, bridge mix, malted milk balls, etc. What the hell is wrong with you (the new company that brought Brach’s)? These candies were the best and you could make a killing off of them. Doesn’t make sense.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Brach’s Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes but have been discontinued for years which saddens thousands of us. But, it also saddens me that one cannot get Brachs candy any longer at the local drug store – paid by the pound and loved the little brachs sacks provided too. I understand that discontinuing this candy was a business move and I can appreciate that, however, this candy has been around for a long time and as a result it has a huge fan base. Personally, I have asked for them in every candy store I have walked into. Now I have learned that they have been discontinued and I am heart broke. How about this idea, bring them back as a special limited edition candy? Maybe around the holidays or Easter or something. I think it would be a huge hit.

Why is it things that we love get taken away. This brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood and the Brach’s display in the stores that we shopped in. The Neapolitan Coconut Candy was always the first thing that I grabbed and put into my bag. Why discontinue something that people love and it puts a smile on their face to keep something that means so much from their childhood. This needs to stay a staple and bring it back. It would be really nice to see the Brach’s Candy Display also bought back to stores. Retro is in and a lot of people appreciate seeing things that they remember. Make a lot of us happy and bring the good memories back!

  • Reply Forrest Anderson January 26, 2017 at 10:44 am

Saw a post on Facebook asking if anyone had eaten these…, starting looking and realized had not seen them in stores for quite awhile. Researched and found where they were discontinued in 2012 ! . No one makes a comparable coconut candy anywhere like this, was my favorite, and I probably had the cavities to prove it growing up. But, as you see the response, there are millions of us and new customers who would love to see them brought back.

  • Reply Tyler June 2, 2017 at 1:20 am

I searched for these back in 2013 and after not finding them i started gettin a horrible feeling in my stomach like id lost a best friend. I have just learned i have. It was discontinued shortly before my four search started. America needs our joy of childhood and pride back. We need coconut sundaes!!! Maybe u should just bring them back and advertise for them more, remake all ur equipment and fire the one whose idea it was. Truly.

Why Brach’s does anything these days remain a bit of a mystery. They still make amazing candy but they have discontinued so many of their iconic items such as Ice Blue Mint Coolers… As to why remains one of the great mysteries of the candy world…

  • Reply John deblasi October 3, 2017 at 8:32 pm

The reason they discontinued these is because over the years the quality went down the toilet and these became nasty hard as a brick crap. Not the excellent candy it was in the sixties. That goes akso for their jelly nugot candy.

Brach’s has discontinued so many of their classic candies that one is left to think that they hired the who made the ill-fated decision to change the Original formula of Coca Cola. The list of discontinued products is beyond extensive and there customer service has all but disappeared. Being one of the oldest Brach’s wholesalers in the nation, I can’t tell you how sad it is to watch the dismantling of a classic American candy brand.

What a poor business decision to discontinue this popular candy favorite! Brachs is losing money by not bringing these back. Some people have no sense of caring what consumers want and what will make them money. Imagine the nostalgia if all the original flavors of brachs showed up in your local store in boxes where you made up a bag of your favorites. Listen up Brachs!

These were my moms favorite candy. I always found them in the bottom of her purse as a child. . As an adult they became my favorite. I remember buying these from Kroger’s 18 yrs ago. I stopped buying them because I was dieting. Now that I’m 60 years old and invisible (lol) I don’t diet anymore. So when I went to look for my favorite candy I found they didn’t make them anymore. How sad😟. I never thought that day at Kroger’s would be the last time I tasted that sweet nostalgic treat. So sad. I don’t understand how a product that’s in demand was taken from the market.

i understand how shrink and shelve space leasing can lead to the downfall of an icon, the Brachs bulk mix,so why not open up Brach stores in high traffic retail centers, Gerhadeli does it….why not Brachs? so many ways to make revenue….you dont have to just sell candies in the store front, so many products (drinks, ice cream snacks, etc.) while a back wall of your iconic candy, you can set up stores in universlstudios East and west coast, strip in Vegas, New York City, South Riverwalk in San Antonio….list goes on and on. Ferraras has the capital to take the risk….if stores like “its sugar” can make it, Brachs bulk candy can be the come back kid of the new mellinium.

We strongly encourage consumers to reach out to manufacturers in the hopes that old school classics will be returned to the market. It never hurts to share your opinion BUT many manufacturers actually do read websites and blogs, especially ours, as they are a barometer for consumer opinion. The more people who share their opinion, both directly and indirectly, the better the chance that the opinion will be heard. Thanks for sharing your comments and let us hope that clearer mids prevail.

Okay Brach’s or Ferrera, people have been asking you to bring these back for several years. It’s time to get busy making them again. As a kid, these were always around when we went to my grandmas house. It was a special treat. Although she’s gone now, Monday would have been her 100th birthday and I was trying to recreate her candy bowl. But the one thing that’s missing is the Neapolitan coconut candies. It’s very disappointing that you haven’t found a way to bring them back yet.

This candy brings back GREAT nostalgic memories for me. My Grandfather (may he RIP) would bring theses candies for my mother and I. He was a very strict disciplined individual, yet took pleasure in seeing the joy this candy bought to my mother and I. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!

Why on earth would a candy company discontinue something as popular as these coconut candies?I am baffled!!! If coconut is suddenly scarce then charge accordingly. I, and others I’m sure, would not hesitate to enjoy these special treats once again!!!

  • Reply Maria November 23, 2020 at 3:54 pm

Check on Amazon. There is a Neapolitan “Coconut Bar” made by Espeez. I found it at our local Candy store. Although it is a different “format” it tastes pretty much the same and I get the coconut lingering in my mouth and between my teeth! 😁

My mom bought us this awesome candy when we were kids at colonial grocery stores in the 1970s in North Carolina

  • Reply Robin December 31, 2020 at 7:13 am

I was missing the old assorted candy bin in the grocery store and started looking for these old favorites. I didn’t know their name just their tricolor square shape and the delicious coconut. The candy bin had paper bags to put your selections in and sold them by weight or you could put your money in the box for a sample. I remember I would get an assorted sack full the butterscotch, peppermint, strawberry or cinnamon hard candies and the flavored toffees and caramels, but these coconut beauties were the gold standard of all candies and the ones I associate with some of my happiest memories. It was not unusual for all of the coconut candies to be eaten before we made it back from the store. They started me on my lifelong love of all things coconut. It’s like being away from home for a long time and learning that a dear friend passed away while you were gone.

  • Reply Robert January 23, 2021 at 10:40 am

Please bring them back. Even for a limited run. Some of my fondest memories are sneaking the family favorite candy. Then taking them to the hide out to savor every bite.

These were my sons favorite candy, there were so few candies that he would eat. He looked forward to Christmas morning to get to his stocking just to get those candies that Santa always had for him. He is 38 now and I still look for them at Christmas to mail to him,and always fail to find them not knowing that they were discontinued years ago. Ughhh. Now I’m so disappointed. Bring them back as a seasonal product,,,,,,please!

Well this is an injustice to the candy world!!! I haven’t had them in yrs and now I see why. Unfortunately it looks like despite the begging to have them brought back…almost 10 yrs later nothing seems to change the company’s mind. Kinda sad that they became such a tradition for so many people. I enjoyed them myself and would LOVE to see them back!!!! MAYBE ONE DAY WE WILL GET TO ENJOY THAT DELISH CANDY!!

Sadly, Brachs seems to be the master of discontinuing items that are/were beloved. The list is long and it is a shame because not only were many of their items delicious – ice blue mint coolers, root beer barrels, etc – but they were iconic.

I am joining the chorus of begging you to bring this back! The Neapolitan and the white nougat with the little jellied flavors were always my favorite go-to candies.
It’s sadly apparent that your company does not care about the consumer.

    • Reply Jonah Half September 1, 2021 at 12:30 pm

It is disconcerting and while we are not a manufacturer – editor’s note, this blog is hosted by CandyFavorites.com, which is backed by the internet’s oldest wholesale candy company – we share your dismay. Brachs’s has gone through too many changes in the past few years and has discontinued almost ALL of their beloved classics. As a company that values old-school candies for both flavor and history, the past few years have been disconcerting as the candy industry as a whole is contracting. What brands will remain after the pandemic is anyone’s guess…

Such a shame. These candies are part of my earliest memories of my grandfather as he gave me my first ones. I then found out he kept them in the glove box of his pickup as they were his favorites as well and I would snitch them. The ones with the caramel in them were the best. I am now a grandfather and would love to be able to share them with my grandkids. Undoubtedly the decision to discontinue was made in the boardroom by a bunch of bone heads. With all of the retro stuff on the market today these would fit right in. Please bring them back.

I don’t know who your decision makers were, are, and, hope never to be your decision makers, EVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN. I have a secret source where I received seven 2½” pieces, that I cherished, and, ate the last of today, as my lunchtime treat. I hope, AND PRAY TO THE GOOD LORD ABOVE, so, that someone in this world will hear my prayer that you get exiled to some long, lost Devil’s type island, and, that ALL YOUR PLANNERS/DECISION MAKERS land on a very similar island, in some far away location, with NONE of your possible delicacies, ever, ever again. One absolutely, tea’s off, about your decision to hire such inept, idiotic, imbeciles NUTS for brains. I started counting the number of “PLEASE” requests, and, quit before getting nearly a third through other , and Not a single comment in favor of your decision. As one who was a Senior Technical writer, I realized after reading my 1st attempts at commenting, I let my anger and zeal get the best of me.
Therefore, this rewrite. To my fellow lovers of the Neopolitan Coconut Sundae, I ask you all for your forgiveness and patience.
    Now, my rewrite ‐->
I don’t know who the decision maker(s) were, are, or, hope to be, but they never, again, be in a position to make any decisions of such import. NEVER, EVER AGAIN. They have to be the MOST ignorant, imbeciles ever, to have held such an important position for such a delicacy, with no learning or training of the candy industry, ever before, or after this decision was made.
I am 76 years old, and remember being weaned on the Neopolitan, Coconut Sundae treats.
I have a secret source where I recently received seven 2½” pieces of this delicacy. I cherished, and, ate the last of them today, as my lunchtime treat.
I hope, AND PRAY TO THE GOOD LORD ABOVE, that someone in this world will hear my prayer, so purveyors of bad decisions like Brach’s, get exiled to some long, lost Devil’s type island, and, that ALL YOUR PLANNERS and DECISION MAKERS land on a very similar island, in some far away location, with NONE of your possible decisions of this nature, especially THESE delicacies, ever, get made again.
I for one, who is absolutely, tea’d off, at Brach’s decision, to hire such inept, idiotic, and apparent imbecilic possibly, untrained, for decisions of this nature. Who’d think to put individuals as these must have apparently been, to have such decisive powers, and, to make such as these kinds of important decisions. Who’d do an act such as this, and even hire such people.
I started counting the number of “PLEASE” requests, and, quit before getting nearly a third through the other comments. Not a single comment was in favor of this decision. That should tell you just how wrong and idiotic a decision as this, apparently was. I can only imagine the jobs that were lost, income loss, and, gross income loss to the company for a decision as this, in loss of gross profit loss to Brachs.
Pay good attention to those comments above, even if you never read another comment, after mine, you, hopefully, will have a very short career in the candy industry. Maybe you should think about becoming trash collectors, rather than people who have anything to do with ANY portion of the candy industry, such as food delicacies like our Neopolitan Coconut Sundae. HAVE YOU GOTTEN THE HINTS, PLURAL? OUR COMBINED HINTS!
