From over 130,000 mentions on social media of the switch of the green Skittles flavoring from Lime to Green Apple in the original, iconic red Skittles pack, Wrigleys knew they made a mistake back in 2013.
After nine years of Green Apple being the flavor of the green Skittle, Mars Wrigley announced that Lime would be making its return to the flavor lineup! Â
The company apologized to everyone who complained about the switch and even posted a 35-minute "press conference." announcing the change!
In the video, they apologized for acts of cowardice, for ruining the flavor experience of Skittles, and for the Apple flavor being less than a fan favorite!
Fernando Rodrigues, Mars Wrigley's senior brand manager, acknowledged that the Skittles community's love for Lime cannot be ignored and that it was a mistake to pull the flavor from the lineup in the first place.
The press conference is posted on the Skittles Youtube page if you want to relive this moment in candy history.Â
The previous classic pack included the Strawberry, Grape, Lemon, Orange, and Green Apple. Now, Green Apple changed back to Lime, pleasing many Skittles fans. It's not a moment too soon!
As mentioned earlier, Lime is a part of Skittle's history. It was one of the "original" five fruity flavors first introduced in 1979.Â
This flavor was a part of the pack for 34 years until 2013 when Green Apple replaced it. It's speculated that they changed the flavor based on the Green Apple craze in the candy industry at the time.Â
When the flavor change in the original pack occurred, the Lime-flavored Skittle didn't wholly disappear.Â
Instead, Lime-flavored Skittles were moved to the new Darkside Skittles, advertised as "the other side of the rainbow." The flavors in the pack included Dark Berry, Blood Orange, Black Cherry, Forbidden Fruit, and of course, Midnight Lime.Â
In 2017 the Lime-flavored Skittle even returned to the iconic red wrapped original pack, which excited fans, but the return was short-lived. However, as of 2022, the return of the Lime Skittle is now permanent, and the original packages with Lime are already here.Â
This return of Lime won't only be to the original pack but also to the Sour edition.Â
Although you may not believe me, the Green Apple flavor isn't universally disliked; it's just that the Lime holds true to the history of Skittles and nostalgia for the original dynamic five fruity flavors. As we all know, candy lovers are a fickle group, and seldom is change appreciated!Â
News of this return sparked excitement all over Twitter and other forms of social media, which were the leading platforms where these debates took place. However, the excitement didn't start with the fans but from the company itself.Â
The marketing for the return of the Lime is more significant than one can imagine. It's right up there with American Licorice returning Licorice Snaps to their original formula, or New Coke returned to Coke Classic.Â
Youtube videos, Twitter posts, and limited edition packaging emphasize its return. Mars Wrigley even posted an edited picture of the Hollywood sign that said: "Lime is Back."Â
So now it will be hard to forget the return of this delicious flavor, and when you need it, we will be here to supply it for you!
