Ice Ice Baby: Brach’s Ice Blue Mint Coolers vs. Brach’s Starbrite Peppermint

December 16, 2009 by

Please leave a comment below so we can encourage Brach’s to BRING THEM BACK!!

Brach’s Ice Blue Mints are DISCONTINUED!

Sharability: 10

Denture Danger: 10  (unless you can resist the temptation to chew it)

Convenience: 10

Novelty: 8

Overall: 8

Brach’s Ice Blue Mint Coolers are an enjoyable and effective candy mint. They are great for many reasons. Firstly, they are blue. It isn’t often that you get a peppermint candy in a translucent blue color, quite aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, they are individually wrapped.

Forget the tic tacs that make it sound like you have a maraca in your pocket. These are conveniently wrapped so that you can throw them into your purse or pocket and munch one down before your date or job interview. Thirdly, you definitely get more of a breath mint effect from the ice blue mint than from the Starbrite peppermint.

The Starbrite peppermint is tasty and sweeter than the blue ice, but it doesn’t give you the same minty cool breath that the blue mint coolers do. Not to say blue mints are so intense that it hurts your teeth just to breathe.

If you want a mint for the primary purpose of eating a candy, choose the Starbrite peppermint (which would also great plopped in a cup of hot chocolate). If you want a mint for the primary purpose of having a minty fresh breath, go with the blue coolers. Enjoy!

I am thoroughly disappointed to hear you are discontinuing
Brach’s Ice Blue Mints. They have been a personal favorite of mine for many, many years. Not to mention, a staple item in my business. My clients and I are very unhappy.
Please reconsider your position on this.

Is there any way that you could start making these ice blue mints again? They are the ONLY mints worth eating because they are so strong. The altoid mints are way to strong and are not enjoyable to eat unlike the ice blues, so I heavily petition that you bring these back. They are an absolute favorite to leave at church for the rest of the congregation to use when they need a mint. Please, Please get them back. Thanks!

We are also very disappointed in the discontinuation of Brach’s Ice Blue Mints. If it were up to us, we would still be selling them. However, Brach’s decided to stop making the Ice Blue Mints so I would suggest petitioning them to bring back such a delicious mint. Thank you for your passionate plea!

Please rethink discontinuing this wonderful mint. Since they helped get me through quitting smoking long ago, they have been a steady companion. I just love them. I used to keep a jar full on my desk. Down to my last 3: (

I have used brach’s Ice Blue Mints for more than 20 years, and I would miss them terribly if you don’t consider making them again. As a business man, I don’t quite understand why you have decided to discontinue manufacturing them. If they sell well, then continue making them!!!.

  • Reply Elaine Downey May 4, 2014 at 2:30 pm

I too relied heavily on the Ice Blue’s when quitting smoking. I am still very shaky having only quit in January.
I would order 2-3 bags thru Candy Favorites every time I ordered, and now have been reduced to cleaning out every coat/jacket/purse, etc. I found about 25 and have been saving them for those moments when I really, really want a smoke.
Please don’t pull my ice blue rug out from under me.

    • Reply Jonah Half May 5, 2014 at 8:28 am

Congratulations on quitting smoking!! We truly wish we could continue to carry Brach’s Ice Blue Mints. However, for some reason that is alluding us, Brach’s decided to stop making them. Since there have been so many people who miss these magnificent mints, we will contact Brach’s and attempt to persuade them to bring the Ice Blue Mints back.

  • Reply Lynn Gustafson May 6, 2014 at 4:49 pm

There was just no comparison between the Mint Coolers and Starbrite peppermints. The mint coolers last much longer and dont fall apart as they disolve. I just can’t believe that you would discontine the best mint hard candy that I have experienced. I just wish I had discovered this a month or two ago when I could still order them. Very disappointed.

We are also dissapointed that Brach’s decided to discontinue Ice Blue Mints. We have received so many complaints about it, we thought it would be best to try to find out why from the manufacturer (which now is Ferrara who bought Brach’s last year). This is the email reply we received back from Ferrara Candy:

“Thank you for contacting Ferrara Candy Company regarding Brach’s® Ice Blue Mint Coolers. Hearing from our consumers better enables us to continue to provide quality products and services. Consumer feedback is very important to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to respond.

We are happy to hear you enjoy our products! Unfortunately, this product is currently discontinued. Due to the high cost of production for specialty items and the lack of sales, we cannot justify the manufacturing of this item at this time. The cost to the consumer would not be in line with other items currently available. However, we do appreciate your comments!

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding the availability of this product. I will share your comments with our marketing and research and development departments. This information will be helpful in our efforts to improve our current product offerings and in the development of new items.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your inquiry. Please visit our website at for additional information about our products and services.

I hope this will help you understand what is happening with the Ice Blue Mints.

  • Reply Jim F. May 6, 2014 at 6:10 pm

Why Brach’s elected to discontinue this awesome and refreshing candy is a mystery. Let’s hope some other candy company can replace what Brach’s has tossed aside!

  • Reply Joanne Martinez May 9, 2014 at 3:09 pm

I’m really upset your discontinuing the ice blue mint. A lot of my friends and I simply love these mints. I can’t find a mint anywhere else that is even close to it. I personally don’t have a problem paying a little more money for it and I am sure the people who really love this mint would either. One of my friends from Georgia even comes to Illinois and buys 2 big bags full to take back home with her. I myself and lots of other people would really wish you would not discontinue this product.

  • Reply Dick May 11, 2014 at 1:28 am

I will truly miss the ice blue mint coolers! I wasn’t able to find them where I live so my son sent me 10 pounds at a time from his state. It is the only hard candy I enjoy and wish they were still available. I often wonder why stores didn’t stock the blue mints along with the other varieties? They were hard to find.

  • Reply Earl Elliott May 16, 2014 at 1:12 pm

I really loved the ice blue mint coolers so much, I would buy 2-4 pounds at a time. In fact, I still have some. However, if brachs can’t give their customers what they want, I will no longer buy any of brachs candies.

  • Reply Debbie Leppala May 19, 2014 at 4:10 pm

I want to say how very disappointed we are that you are no longer providing Ice Blue mint coolers. They have been our favorite for many years. They have also been my candy of choice when I quit smoking. They are still my husbands now while he is trying to quit smoking. He is not going to be happy at all. Please reconsider putting them back on the market.

  • Reply Susan Towner June 3, 2014 at 9:45 pm

I am so disappointed that Brach’s is not continuing to manufacture the Ice Blue Mint Coolers. I depend on this mint to get me through the day. Nothing else compares. Please reconsider. There are many of us who would be willing to pay more than the price of an average candy for this very special item.

  • Reply Elaine Downey June 13, 2014 at 12:27 pm

I always wondered why Brachs stopped putting the ice blues in those candy bins at the grocery stores. They were always sold out, and there were tons of other candies that no one wanted.
Not very good business sense to STOP the most popular item, is it? Doesn’t Ferrara want to be successful??? Guess not.
I don’t think I want to do business with a company that makes such bad business decisions.

I am so upset that blue mints have been discontinued. They are the only candy I eat. I know I\’ve bought them for at least 30 years. When they stopped selling them in stores, I started ordering on line many years ago. Everyone always asks me for a blue mint. I think if Brach\’s put them back in the stores, they would find that they would be a best seller again. Bad marketing from many years ago has caused them to discontinue these gems. Sad, sad day. Please reconsider your decision.

  • Reply Elaine Downey June 25, 2014 at 2:23 pm

Last weekend I was cleaning out an old purse and found 3 ice blues. I made them last all day.
I also broke down and ordered the “other” little blue mint from your website. Disappointing to say the least. Each one tastes different, and none of them are even close to the ice blue flavor.
Wish there was some entrapaneuer out there who could afford to buy the rights/recipe for ice blues and get them back in our candy dishes.

I am so disappointed to hear my ice blue mints have been discontinued. They are part of a very special memory with my grandparents, and my grandmother just passed. I have been searching for a bag for about 3 weeks, just because my heart is broken and I want some in her memory, only to find that they no longer exist. Nothing else is the same as these, and the memory is very important to me. PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR POSITION! Not only is this a candy for me, but also a part of my life! I share them with my children and now grandchildren in the same way as my grandmother shared them when we were very small, and to me it is as if another part of my life just slipped away. The story is long and the memory strong, just like the refreshingly strong flavor of the Ice Blue Mints ( better known in our family as Blue Lake mints) HEARTBROKEN

I am so disappointed that the Ice Blue Mints have been discontinued. I have a very serious cough and have found that these mints are the only thing that will clear up my head and help keep me from coughing. Cough drops don’t do the trick at all and neither do the Starbrite Peppermints, but the icy mints are wonderful. I use them at the Symphony, the opera, during church, and during any event in which I which to avoid coughing. Please, please reconsider. Nothing else is as effective, and if you have any hidden back somewhere, may I please purchase them for health reasons?

Thank you for giving this opportunity to request a change or heart.

I never am without 2 or 3 ice blues in my pocket whether at work, a ballgame, or sitting in church. Friends and family know they can depend on me to have a ‘stash’ of ice blues. There are NO substitutions! One ice blue lasts a whole church service unlike starburst (red and white) that melt to fast. I have been enjoying them since they were introduced.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. Sure goes along with even a piece of candy. The cool minty taste is unparalleled. This is one of the few mints that has a dye that does not cause me to wheeze as red dues do. I am allergic to chocolate and red dyes. The blue mints provide an alternative to the allergens in other candies. There is no comparing this mint to the starlike mint, that’s like apple and oranges. No comparison! I just ask you to rethink what you have done by not having this candy. Im so terribly disappointed my all time favorite mints have been discontinued. My grandfather gave me these mints when I was a little girl 30+ years ago) and I have been eating them ever since. I looked and searched everywhere for them. Please, please reconsider and make them again. I am truley heartbroken over this.

I looked and looked for these candies. The Navy Exchange use to have them all the time. Very disappointed when they no longer had them in the Brach’s Bins. Now I find out that they no longer make them. WOW! What a let down. PLEASE bring them back!

the best candy in the world. you haven’t been leaving a sample of it in major stores nor have you been trying to sell it, because it sells itself when it is available. please bring it back toute-suet.

I have spent the last few years hunting for your Ice Blue mints, and its like participating in a scavenger hunt. When i was a little girl one of the church members would give me one if I sang or said my speech without reservation. I still call it the church candy. Now I’m on the other side of that candy and would love to have Ice Blue Mints to give out. They were and still are the best. Please think about it, after all its also a patriotic color!!

.when I feel naseous they are the only things that calms my tummy..I have been trying other peppermint candies and they do not do the trick like these blue mints do..even the square blue mints don’t do it.please bring these back!!!

Please bring these back! My mom is literally freaking out. These are her favorite candies and have been for over 30 years. Help an old lady out.

DISCONTINUED!! I’m crushed! These are the memories of my Mother that passed away. I asked everyone what they wanted that reminded them OD Mom. Everyone requested one of her candy dishes with the ice blue mints candies. She ALWAYS had only Brach’s ice blue mints candies. The starbrites wouldn’t be the same. Thoroughly disappointed! Please bring them back! Give it a try Brach’s, what can it hurt. Seems like many people want them back.

We too are disappointed! We have reached out to Brach’s on numerous occasions but they have not responded. We encourage consumers to reach out to them as well as if enough people complain, they might just listen…

Very upset about this and also in my area in Ohio difficult to find the butterscotch and green starlight, upset about that as well brachs candies have been a continued tradition in our family

  • Reply Carole W June 18, 2017 at 8:46 am

Please reconsider the discontinuation of your ice blue mints. They are the only mints my pastor and the ministers at my church like. We cannot find anything remotely close that provide the same freshness/coolness to your mouth. Because they are a disc, they are easier to suck on and don’t make you look like you are sucking on a big boulder. Again, please reconsider.

Even with my the World Wide Web I can’t find anything that comes close to my beloved Ice blue mint coolers. I’m so heartbroken that such a beloved candy is not being made anymore. These are disturbing times, watching the news is nothing but doom and gloom. As time goes by it seems there is very little that can make a person happy. Sweets are the answer. Everyone loves or at least likes sweets. Ice blue mint coolers are the answer for peace and harmony in my life. The powerful taste, not too sugary. C’mon man, bring them back. I’m sure the people will pay the crazy shipping prices just to have a mint and a smile. I’m serious. Please submit a valid reason for discontinuing the mint or provide the recipe.
