An Original Name

Westphalia Germany

Werther’s Original began its life as Werther’s Echte, which translates to Werther’s Genuine or Authentic. If you’re guessing that meant it came from Germany, then you’d be completely correct! Way back in 1903, a man by the name of August Storck set up a candy company in the small town of Werther in the Westphalia region of Germany.

As the story goes, Gustav Nebel, one of Storck’s earliest employees, created the delicious caramel treat with only the best ingredients, care, and love. These are three qualities that the company believes are still evident in the product today! They’re also three qualities we believe you can still taste in each and every one of their sweets.

An Original Success

Werther's Original BagThe Name Werther’s Echte stuck around until the 1990’s, when the company changed the name to Werther’s Original for the international market. Since becoming an international phenomenon, the commercial advertisements for this candy have all been focused around sweet moments of bonding, usually between a grandfather and grandson. This continues the family-oriented approach that Storck began his company with, all the way back in 1903.

Today, happy candy lovers in over 80 countries, worldwide, enjoy Werther’s Original! They’re a staple of grandmothers’ purses, and have the powerful ability to conjure up warm and fuzzy memories of childhood. So next time you pop one into your mouth, you can take heart knowing exactly where that candy came from.
