As anyone who has ever visited us knows, we have a soft spot for anything related to candy history, if only because we were selling retro candy long before it was "retro".
The Dubble Bubble Big Bar holds a special place in our hearts, if only because we have been selling chewing gum since the day, our wholesale company opened its doors 98 years ago!
A Lot of Interesting Things Were Happening in 1928
As Charles Lindbergh hopped out of his plane, bleary-eyed after his 33-hour solo flight across the Atlantic, America's first regular television show streamed from New York, a gigantic squid, straight out of the pages of Moby-Dick, was discovered in the Antarctic, an accountant and curious tinkerer named Walter Deemer stumbled upon a formula for chewing gum specifically designed for blowing bubbles.
It was a novel concept and probably far more interesting for Mr.Deemer than crunching numbers. Little did he know that almost 100 years later, he would be considered the "Father of Bubble Gum." and thus Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum was born!
While many other chewing gums had already been invented by 1928, Dubble Bubble gained the distinction of being the first chewing gum sold specifically for blowing bubbles! A novel concept, indeed!
One might say that he's not a favorite historical figure for teachers, movie theater owners, or anyone else who has experienced the residue of bubble gum, but that's a whole different discussion.
In many ways, Dubble Bubble was one of the predecessors of what we know as novelty candy, as this pink-colored gum came in a wrapper featuring a comic strip.
Dubble Bubble was also the first bubble gum to be included in the ration packs of soldiers during World War II.
In comparison to Dubble Bubble's accidental yet storied discovery, Bazooka Bubble Gum, ironically named after a World War II-era weapon, was invented in 1947. It took six more years for a comic to be included.
If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!
Over time, the formula for Dubble Bubble was modified to create better bubble gum.
Whether this was accomplished is a matter of speculation. Still, based on the popularity of the Original 1928 Formula Big Bar, one may conclude that Walter Deemer had the formula right from the start.
What Makes the 1928 Dubble Bubble Formula Special?
The original formula was chewy, flavorful, and was created with bubble blowing in mind, much to the continued chagrin of parents who can't stand when their children blow bubbles or, worse, crack their gum!
It had a soft yet resilient texture and a subtly sweet, classic bubble gum flavor that today's versions often try—and fail—to replicate. With the re-release of the Dubble Bubble Big Bar using this old-school recipe, fans can experience bubble gum the way their parents and even their grandparents once did.
Final Chew
The Dubble Bubble Big Bar, made with the Original 1928 formula, isn't your everyday bubble gum.
It's a step back in time when bubbles were bigger, and gum was sweeter, and it's probably one of the best-tasting bubble gums available! Unfortunately, the price is a bit different from what it was in 1928, but alas, that applies to everything!
The packaging features 1920s graphics and includes PUD, who was featured in the first comics.
The actual bubble gum bar measures in at a whopping 10," and the box weighs 5 pounds!
All Dubble Bubble products are gluten- and peanut-free and are also OU Kosher certified too!
