Few candies have as much staying power as Brach's Milk Maid Caramels, a chewy, rich caramel square that has delivered moments of sweet bliss to candy lovers and for more than one hundred years.

They were the first product offered by Brach's when the company opened in 1904 and cost a whopping $.20 per pound which, at the time, made them one of the most expensive and extravagant candies available.

Although these caramel squares were one of the first wrapped candies to be sold by the pound, they were often sold individually and were a standard offering at any penny candy counter, and we're proud to help keep the tradition alive.

There are approximately 35 pieces of Brach's Milk Maid Caramels per pound.

Q: Are there two kinds of caramels-A soft and A hard ? I prefer the hard! Roy C
Candy Expert
A: No, Brach's only produces one variety of Milk Maid Caramels and they are, for the most part, soft. Bear in mind that caramels can change consistency if they are exposed to warm or cold weather and or humidity. All of ours are factory fresh and inspected prior to release ensuring that they are of the highest quality. By the way, did you know that these were the first product offered by Brachs in the early 1920's and the first wraped penny candy to cost more than a penny.....

Q: Approx. 46 years ago at Christmas, we used to purchase 5 lb. boxes of Brach's assorted chocolates at our G. C. Murphy 5&10 store. They had the best hard (not soft and chewy) caramels in them. Sad to say, Brach's like most other companies stopped making their best products so I have not bought any other Brach's products. I see caramels advertised here, but wonder if they are the soft variety (which I hate) or the firm ones I remember from so long ago.
Candy Expert
A: Dear Bonnie, I remember the Brach's Assorted Chocolates well. They were delicious and a mainstay of any well stocked bulk candy display. Like so many of the classic Brach's Confections - think Neapolitan Coconut Squares, Dark Chocolate Stars, et al -- they were discontinued when the company was purchased by Ferrara Pan... Gone but not forgotten...

The Milk Maid Caramels were their first product and they are still available. They are a medium soft piece of candy but please bear in mind that they might be harder if exposed to cold weather and softer during the summer months. The good news is that the formula remains the same.

Thanks for reaching out and I hope this answers your question...

Sincerely,

Jon H.PRINCE

Q: do either of these candies come in sugar free?
Candy Expert
A: To our knowledge, these products were never offered by Brach's in a Sugar Free variety. It is a great idea though....

Q: How long will the Milk Maid Caramel's stay fresh? Can you freeze them?

A: I HAVE FOUND THAT THE NEW MILK MAID CARAMELS ARE NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE. THEY NOW CONTAIN SOY, AND ARE UNEDIBLE. I HAD TO THROW THEM IN THE GARBAGE AS THEY WERE MAKING ME SICK. I AM ALERGIC TO SOY. READ YOUR INGREDIENTS IF YOU LIKE. S CARAMELS
Candy Expert
A: They should stay fresh for several months. As per freezing them, I suppose you could but I think it would be better for you to simply put them in a ziplock type container and keep them at room temperature away from extremes of temperature. Better yet, eat a few daily and they will be gone in no time...

Q: We regularly purchase the chocolate pinwheels and milk caramels from the Publix Grocery Store here in Richmond Hill and these two items always sell out and it takes weeks to see them back in the store. Can you deliver these candies more often to the Richmond Hill Store? I promise we will always purchase these two candies.
Candy Expert
A: Sadly, we can not deliver to the Richmond Hill store but the good news is that we always have Brach's Candy in stock and you can order it online and have it delivered to your house in less than a week! Brach's Milk Maid Caramels are one of our best sellers and they are always available.
