Milk Duds were made in 1928 with the intention of creating a round caramel candy which the manufacturer found out was an all but impossible task hence sometimes the best things happen by accident.
Once the manufacturers realized that they couldn't make a perfect sphere out of chewy caramel they decided the term “dud” should be included in the name. Also, with milk being one of the ingredients the final name of the candy came to be Milk Duds.
While the expectations of the candy shape turn out to be a dud, the candy taste certainly was not!
