Why has the taste of Brach’s Malts changed?

June 24, 2009 by
Brach's Malted Milk Balls aka Brach's Malts

Brach's Malted Milk Balls aka Brach's Malts

Brach’s Malted Milk Balls aka Brach’s Malts have been a favorite of candy lovers for many years. The candy was made with delicious rich milk chocolate and had a crunchy malt center.

In recent months, the taste has changed and many think that it has not been for the better.

We contacted Customer Service at Brach’s Candy (a subsidiary of Farley’s & Sathers) and they graciously replied as follows:

“Farley’s & Sathers made an adjustment to this product formula. We will be evaluating consumer reactions and responses to the changes in this product on a weekly basis in an effort to determine consumer impact. Your feedback is important to us, and the information you provided will be considered as we review and evaluate the changes to this item…”

If sales are an indication, consumers do not like the new formula…

As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…”

Please note that we WILL  NOT be accepting any more comments per this item on the blog and all comments must be directed to the the Forum listed above…

Brach’s and only Brach’s Malted Milk Balls are the favorite candy of my whole family. We have ordered it in 6lbs bags for years. Very disappointed to learn that there has been a change in this wonderful candy! It has also become impossilbe to find it in the stores or on the web, except for Amazon. Please encourage whoever makes the decisions…to return Brach’s Malt Balls back to it’s original delicious taste!

I just purchased a bag of Brachs after a long search in the Burbank area. I was astonished, shocked and disgusted at how they tasted. Worse than whoppers. I don’t know who is running the decisions at Brach’s, but they should be fired. I have been buying Malts since I was 8, and I am 40 now. I loved them as they were the best, beating out all other brands by far.

Coca Cola tried the same thing and failed to change the original formula due to public protest. I know that Malted Milk Balls, are not consumed by the masses like Coke is, but I sure hope there is a boycott on this product or a new manager comes in and goes back to the original formula.

The worse tasting, I have to now buy Whoppers, which is a step above nothing– they are really disgusting too, but better than the new Brach’s..

Get it together Brach’s, don’t change things that are obviously working and have for decades..

All my family and friends knew to buy Brach’s Malted Milk Balls for me. I now have to contact them all and tell them not to.

The closest thing I’ve found is the Malted Milk Balls from the bins @ Whole Foods. They’re a little sweet and there is not as much of a malt to chocolate ratio, but they’re pretty good.

Sure hope Brach’s (or rather Farley’s and whatever) comes to their senses.

My family and I are avid fans of your Malted Milk Balls and have been for quite some time. We shop at Publix and we are able to purchase by the pound. However, over the last six months the chocolate has not been up to your standard. I can definitely taste the difference in the quality of the chocolate. It is not as rich of chocolate. If this is going to be your new norm then I will discontinue purchasing your chocolates. I certainly hope this is not the case. I will have to purchase my malted milk balls from Cracker Barrel until which time you return to the original recipe.

On July 16th, we received a memo from our Brach’s Representative about the formula change:

There is a new formulation with a new item number so there is no product confusion. I am waiting to see how soon that I can have samples sent to you. It is not the original formula, but the chocolate has a lower melting point and a better balance has been achieved between the chocolate and the malt. I will let you know.

Brach’s Malted Milk Balls (Malts) have been my favorite candy all of my life. I am always giving them to Whoppers lovers to show them what great malted milk balls are. And I have never gotten a negative comment from them.

I am very disappointed that Brach’s has changed the candy. I was bummed when they became so difficult to find. And now, as hard as they are for me to get, I am hearing that they now are made with terrible chocolate.

Brach’s, please. I will even pay a higher price for them to be made as they were when they were great!

I just spoke to a representative at Farley and Sather. She informed me that they are making another change to the chocolate to improve the Malted Milk Balls. Unfortunately, they are still not going back to the original formula. She assures me that they are a LOT better than what we get right now, though.

    I guess we will see.

I just bought a second bag after tasting a horrible batch from about a month ago. Same crappy formula. The chocolate resembles wax, and does not readily melt in my mouth. The malt center tastes bad as well. This is all very disappointing, as Brach’s Malts have always been a guilty little pleasure. Now they taste about the same as Whoppers, maybe a even worse, since I always expected so much more from Brach’s.

To Brach’s: Tamper with the formula all you like. You twice admitted that you would not go back to the original formula, so you obviously don’t care what people think (more importantly, your loyal customers). At least Coca-Cola had the hindsight to offer their original formula once they realized their mistake.

This really saddened me, I only ate Brach Malt Balls, They were best out of all malted balls but the change is so disappointing. Why was it necessary to change a wonderful product. Another nail in the coffin in re to my childhood memories.

I have been on a diet all summer and all I wanted for my birthday was a bag of Brach’s Malt Balls instead of a traditional cake. I too was astonished at the disgusting flavor. Waxy worse than whoppers and palmer’s chocolate. And the malt was horrible too. Please change back to the old. I will never buy a bag of any of your chocolate if it continues to taste like that! It has been my favorite for the past 39 years, there was nothing to compare them to.

  • Reply Cindy July 24, 2009 at 2:21 pm

They have admitted they won’t go back to the original formula? Why? They must have a reason. My husband works for a grocery chain and I bugged him for the longest time to carry Brach’s bulk candy in the stores. Now I think I’ll talk him into getting rid of all Brach’s. Maybe if stores won’t carry their product, they will rethink this horrible “new” recipe.

  • Reply Bets July 27, 2009 at 2:01 pm

I totally agree with all of the above. Brach\’s Malts have been my favorite until i bought a bag about 3 weeks ago. Those were terrible. The chocolate coating did NOT melt in your mouth like it used to. Please go back to the origin recipe.

  • Reply Angela July 31, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Thank you, Brachs, for changing the formula of the malted milk balls! The flavor is so horrible and disappointing that you have cured my addiction. I no longer have to worry about the temptation to stray from my diet and should resume losing weight soon. Thanks again!

  • Reply Sunflower August 4, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Angela, I feel exactly the same way!! Because Brach’s changed the malted milk ball formula to taste disgusting, waxy, flavorless and nothing like the original, I have now been “cured” of my malted milk ball addiction! Brach’s used to make the perfect malted milk ball, no other brand ever came close.

I remember a few months ago going to the store to treat myself to a bag. I spit them out, yuck! I thought it was just a bad batch, so I purchased another bag elsewhere. That bag sucked, too. I still thought it was just my imagination, so I had my daughter try them. Yep, she, agreed that the recipe was changed for the absolute worst. Imagine how thrilled I was to see this blog and realize that I wasn’t alone! I posted a comment on their web-site and I suggest everyone who feels the same way do the same. Here’s the link:

Dear Brachs – PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE change the Malted Milk Balls back to what they were before. I recently bought a bag which are my favorites of all time and it felt like I was eating wax. I couldn’t spit it out fast enough. I thought I bought a stale bag so I went back to the store and bought another one. SAME HORRIBLE TASTE. I get on your web site to discover that you guys had changed the recipe in March 2009. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed that you messed with a good product. This not only doesn’t pass the “REAL” chcolate test but the malt flavor itself isn’t there. Everything went in the garbage. The name BRACH represents the “real stuff” in all of your products. I just don’t understand why you discredited yourself. If it was expense – I would rather pay more for a good product than settle for less which I will not do. Sorry it has to come to this – but I must leave you until you come to your senses. Do let me know when you’ve reconsidered and are willing to change back to what it once was.

  • Reply Cindy August 7, 2009 at 4:21 pm

I heard that Brach\\\’s farmed the making of the malt balls out to another company and changed the recipe in order to save money and to help with loss of product since these new malt balls have a lower melting point, WOW, GREAT IDEA! Since these taste so bad, people will stop buying them, then you can save more money by not having to ship your product, AND you can lay people off, close down your plant…….Just think of the savings! You guys are brilliant!

  • Reply Luane August 11, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Holy smokes – the new Brachs Malted Milk Balls are awful, very fake and waxy…….. – please change them back to the original recipe – or start a new line called \"Classic Brachs Malted Milk Balls\" using the good rich chocolate………….up your prices if need be but please keep your old chocolate recipe. I am hoping that you will admit your mistake soon, make a commercial about returning to your original chocolate – bags will fly off the shelves and your loyal customers will be happy once again!!!!!!!!!!

  • Reply Janet August 17, 2009 at 12:47 pm

The only treat I enjoyed buying was Brachs Malted Milk Balls. The new formula is terrible, waxy. The chocolate breaks off in chunks and won’t even melt in your mouth. Hopefully everyone sent Brach’s their complaints and the original recipe will come back.

  • Reply maggie August 17, 2009 at 7:15 pm

I wrote to the company and received the same response. I didn’t know there were so many of us out there! Thank you for sharing these comments with me. My dissappointment in this “new” product will not have me purchasing any more Malts until the “old” recipe is brought back. I think poor Mr. Brach is rolling over in his grave to find what they’ve done to his age old recipe.

I LOVED Brachs Malted Milk Balls. If they had them in any store I couldn’t keep myself from buying a bag. When I got a craving (which I always did) I would drive out of my way if need be to buy them. I never found another malted milk ball that was better or even came close. I couldn’t wait to get the first one in my mouth. After the first I couldn’t stop. Well, our love affair is over! I bought a bag about a month ago, put the first one in my mouth and gagged. I couldn’t believe what you did to this delicious product.
I still have that bag to remind me to contact Customer Service. I have and now I can throw the bag (still full except for the first horrible one) away. This change in formula is ghastly. I felt like I had put something in my mouth that wasn’t meant to be eaten. I hated Whoppers the most, but now Brachs has taken its place as the worst I have ever come across. I don’t know what genius decided this was a good move. I guess he (they) thought Brachs had too many malted milk ball customers and wanted to get rid of a few (my guess is like maybe 100%) and/or he (they) didn’t try the new formula. It’s not made for human consumption! I would be glad to pay more for the original formula, but won’t be eating any more Brach’s Malted Milk Balls unless it’s changed back to the original formula. To save a little money I think you’re going to lose a lot of customers. To go from something so delicious to something so atrocious is insanity. Do you think lovers of the old formula will buy the new formula? If so, you’re more delusional than I thought. I don’t think any lover of your old formula will settle for anything else. This is sad and a BIG mistake on your part.

I have to echo the sentiments of the vast majority of the posters. Brach’s Malted Milk Balls have been my favorite candy since childhood, but this incarnation ranks down the list of imitation substitutes for synthetic malted milk candy. I don’t give a rip about melting points or anything like that, I just like the taste of good milk chocolate and crisp malted milk. Please, Brach’s, at least revive the orignal formula. I will pay a premium price for it. Better yet, give the formula to me, and I will find a way to make enough to satisfy the strange people who seems to like the old MMB’s.

I want the real brachs back. I have searched everywhere in houston texas and cannot find them. I can\’t eat whoppers. They just aren\’t good malted milk balls. Please email me where I can find them and the original ones not the new formula.

My biggest diet buster was your WONDERFUL malted milk balls. However, I will never again buy them since your new formula tastes like the wax scrapings off an old musty candle. I discovered that the word “chocolate” is no longer on the bag. What the heck??? The simple pleasure of popping one of the delicious candies into my mouth is now gone. PLEASE, PLEASE bring back the original candy that I grew up with. Until you do, I will never buy another Brach’s product since I can’t trust them anymore.

Just purchased 7lbs of Brachs Malted Milk Balls after finally finding them in a local grocery store. After years of searching for them individually packaged I was just so excited to find them…I bought every bit the store had which came to about 7lbs. I grew up eating them whenever my grandmother would take me shopping with her and when I became of age…..I ate them throughout high school, college all throughout my adult life until I could no longer find them. I guess the reason that they are hard to find is because I am now aware of the HORRIBLE new taste of them. How sad for a company who had been around for all these years to conform to some \"new\" formula that taste like lard and watered down chocolate FLAVORED POWDER. I will be returning them to my local grocer in hopes of a refund. I guess it was not meant to hold on to cherished memories through my tast buds. Shame on you BRACHS!

The decision to change the formula for Brachs Malts from real chocolate and malted milk to brown waxy stuff covering a unknown crunchy center makes no sense in a time in which even WalMart carries premium chocolates and when buying expensive chocolates is the guilty pleasure of many adults. People even spend $3.00 on tiny boxes of premium M&M’s (of all things)! So, I am certain that there are many of us who are more than willing to pay extra to get our hands on the original Brach’s Malts. Please, please, please bring them back! (But make sure you put “Original Recipe” on the front — otherwise I won’t take a chance on buying another bag.)

So there for I will not be buying them anymore. Your malted milk balls were like gold, now they are a bronze or lower type of quality.

I agree with all the above posts. I went ahead and sent a comment to the new owners of Brachs as well. I only bought Brach’s and I always bought the malted milk balls and sometimes the chocolate covered almonds but the malts were my favorite. If I sent someone on an errand to buy me some malted milk balls I ALWAYS specified BRACH’s and NOT WHOPPERS. Now I guess I won’t be having malted milk balls any longer.

  • Reply Melissa October 2, 2009 at 10:39 am

Brach’s malted milk balls have been my favorite since I was a small kid. It was a Saturday tradition to go the the five and dime and buy me some malts. I live in a rural area and now have trouble finding Brach’s malts, but I search everywhere I go for my favorite candy and I’m now in my mid forties. It disappoints me that they have ruined such a wonderful product. I HATE WHOPPERS, LOVE BRACH’s only (the old Brach’s that is)

  • Reply Carole Nance October 10, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Got the shock of my life yesterday @ Kroger’s with the purchase of Brachs Malted Balls. I thought Kroger had an inferior malt ball brand in the Brachs candy bin!

The chocolate feels and tastes like a plastic in the mouth.

Where is the creamy, smooth chocolate of the past?

You can have the product, I will not buy it. In fact, now that I know Brachs have made a change, I am going to take this bag back to Krogers with my complaint.

I will not buy anything Brachs until I know they have gone back to the chocolate of years past.

I blamed Kroger for using another brand of malt balls in the Brachs bin. Shame on me!

Shame on Brachs for ruining a time tested product.

It is high time!!!!! It was the best malt ball. And why do Whoppers dominate shelf space?? They are terrible!!!! Even when your malt ball was good, it was impossible to find in the store. It should be front and center. Bill

I agree! Brach’s Malt balls have been my favorite since I was a child. I can remember going to the dime store and buying a dimes worth 🙂 I have to admit that I have tried the “new” malt balls twice. I thought I might have gotten a bad batch the first time, but after the second bag I “knew” there was something wrong. The “new” ones are very, very gross. I hope the new company realizes what a mistake they made. I also hate WHOPPERS. Yuck! Bring back the oringal Brach Malt Balls!

  • Reply Melissa October 19, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Brach\’s malt balls were my favorite candy. I used to melt them in my mouth, first the chocolate, then the malt center-so delicious! I haven\’t been able to find them in years, but last week while in North Carolina they had them in one of the candy bins at Ingles. I packed a big bag full, and when I got home, I thought they had put in some other type of malt balls. These were horrible, would not melt. Now I found this. WHY THE HECK DID THEY CHANGE THIS?! If they won\’t change it back, I\’m glad I can\’t find them, because they SUCK.

  • Reply LARRY October 21, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I noticed the change about a year ago and I haven’t bought them since. I used to go to Menards building store just to pick up a bag of the real chocolate malts. Now that they have the waxy kind, I don’t go as often. Who ever thought that changing the formula was a good idea should be forced to eat them every day for punishment.

  • Reply Di October 28, 2009 at 1:42 pm

All of Brach’s Candy seems to have changed. We LOVED the chocolate-covered peanuts and candy corn. We use to buy the chocolate-covered peanuts on a weekly basis but won’t do that any more. I recently purchased a family favorite, the candy corn, but I ended up thowing the entire bag out after the whole family complained. I don’t understand why companies cut corners like this. They only harm themselves.

I’m so sad to see this. I only discovered Brach’s Malt Balls early this year, and have been steadily buying the our grocery store’s packages of them. When I bought the last one, they didn’t get restocked. And they haven’t for a few months now. I never realized why, but it must be related to this sad news! I’m so sad I just barely found out, and I’m wondering if any other stores may still have old packages (my grocery store is pretty bad about rotating their candy. Back when I only bought whoppers they could be pretty old.
So do the “bad” or “new” product come in a different looking package?

  • Reply Julie October 29, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I, too, loved Brach’s Malt Balls. There are no other malt balls on the market like them. The chocolate was perfect – the malt delicious. Good ratio of malt to chocolate -can’t say enough about them!! What a sad day- everything just keeps going down in quality and up in price. At least bring them back as they were and charge us through the nose – we won’t mind!

  • Reply Diane October 30, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I just got back from Wisconsin where they still sell Brach’s Malts. I bought a small bag just to check out the July “reformulation” that this website administrator mentioned above. The chocolate is only slightly less waxy, but the malt isn’t any better than the post-March Malts . They still are not worth buying. It makes me sad.

    Update…
I called and complained to Farley\’s and Sathers and they apologized. They said that by October that they would be changing the formula back to the original. I waited and tried some tonight. The malt was better but the chocolate was still not the same. I will call again and see what is up. I will never buy them again if this is the only change they are making.

  • Reply Steve November 18, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Let’s face it folks…… you WON’T see the original candy again. It’s history. The bean counters took over when Farley bought Brach’s. These people are not candy makers….. they are cash registers. If they can get you for a few extra pennies on each purchase, that’s exactly what will do. They are not interested in quality, they are interested in those pennies.

Farleys doesn’t have a clue what good chocolate is. Don’t hold your breath waiting for them to change it back.

  • Reply Pamela November 19, 2009 at 5:33 pm

I just tossed a bag of Malts because they now taste like Whoppers. The chocolate is waxy and tasteless. I have been a faithful purchaser and promoter of Malts since I was a kid. If they don\’t change back to the original recipe, I will no longer be purchasing them.

  • Reply Martha November 25, 2009 at 9:25 pm

If Farley’s owns Brach’s now all their chocolate is going to go down hill. I have been an avid Malts eater since I was a kid, Easter pastel malts are my favorite. I have eaten Whoppers, the maybe get a C+. I have also eaten Farley’s version of a malted milk ball, GROSS, they use cheap chocolate and even cheaper malt. Of all the chocolate makers out there Farleys is the worst. I am so disappointed, I will sadly miss my Malts.

    Dear Sirs,
As a kid I loved Whoppers, then when I got married, my wife introduced me to the succulent delights of Brach’s Malts. WOW, What a difference! I was hooked. For many years, we were always buying Malts until health issues required me to give up chocolate. I have now fully recovered and last night we decided to purchase a bag of Malts. My great anticipation turned into great dissapointment when I found out I bought a bag of whopper wanna-bes. I’m sure your product development team warned you that you would loose some Malts devotees. I’m just saddened that I am one of them and that they are gone forever.
So, now to the task of finding a suitable replacement.

    Sincerely,

I bought a bag of Brach’s Bridge Mix this week. It tastes awful, like something that has absorbed a plastic, chemical taste from packaging, perhaps. I can usually enjoy anything covered in chocolate, even less than premium candy, but not this. I tried to send feedback to Farley’s & Sathers, but their website, like their bridge mix, has problems, and I can’t get anything but the main page–no links.

Trying to submit this again…I just finally found Brachs Malts at my local grocery after a very long search to find them again. I bought two bags! To my dismay, they have changed the recipe. They are practically inedible. I even checked the date thinking they were old as they taste dusty and not fresh like the ones which were once available. I hope that Brachs will revert back to the old recipe. I will not be buying anymore unless I somehow discover that the old recipe is back! Please make the old reliable malts again!

For those of you who have found them at the store, can you give me the name of the store? Maybe they have the same store here in Kansas City and I can give them a try.

What is wrong with this world today. If you can\’t cheat us on quanitity you will make it back in qualitiy. First Hersey takes \"milk\" out of it\’s chocolate and now this. It\’s all about how much money you can put back into your own pockets. I have been on a search for malted milk balls for over a year now. Now I understand why the stores stopped carrying them, BECAUASE THEY ARE GROSS!!! The Jelly Belly brand is at least half the malt balls than the new flavor! Well I guess my search is offically over. I will no longer be on a quest to find my childhood candy. Even the chocolate stars are worse then I remember. Why do you have to change things when they aren\’t broke. I am with the rest, raise your prices rather than sacrifice quality! Poor Mr. Brach\’s. Wish he could see what you are doing to his MOUTH WATERING RECIPES! All to make a buck.

I quit buying the Brach’s Malts in August because they tasted so bad. I thought I would try some today. They still taste terrible. The chocolate is barely 1/16 of an inch thick.

Try Jelly Belley ones, they are okay!

Please change the malted milk balls back to the old recipe. I quit buying them. At first I thought they were sugarfree and had been put in the wrong bin. I saw a rep on day and he said they had changed the recipe. CHANGE IT BACK!

  • Reply Maggie January 23, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Glad to know it wasn’t just me. I detected the original change (absolutely awful!) and the failed attempt to win us back (only slightly less awful). Please change back to the original formula (great chocolate, thickly applied, with tasty crisp malt). I am not buying any Brach products until then. I’m sure I can find a great chocolate indulgence from some other company.

I have not been able to find Brach’s malted milk balls in stores for a couple years now. Whoppers are terrible and I never buy them. I am upset that the formula for Brach’s malteds was changed. Every review I’ve read online says they hate the new formula. The real milk chocolate covering was the best part about them. I was going to find somewhere online to order them, but not now.

If/when I hear that the formula is changed back then I’ll buy them again. I do hope it’s soon. I haven’t had any in ages.

CHANGE BACK TO THE OLD FORMULA!

  • Reply Heidi January 31, 2010 at 4:39 pm

YES! My mom, my sister, and myself have been trying to figure out why Brach’s made this terrible change. Our entire family has been long time fans of Brach’s malted milk balls (Whoppers are disgusting); however, the changes to the taste they have recently now makes them taste as bad or worse than Whoppers. Hopefully you are posted our comments to the corporation and they change it back!

Please change the name on the bag of “Brach’s” malted milk balls to to Farley or Sather’s. It’s only fair. We can quit buying imposters, throwing them in the garbage, and wasting money. We can quit hoping we’ll find a bag we can actually eat. Too sad.

  • Reply Nancy February 1, 2010 at 6:38 pm

I so agree, it\’s such a major disappointment. Perhaps we could get our hands on the original recipe and someone can start a nice little business selling decent, genuine, wonderful malted milk balls!

  • Reply Michael March 13, 2010 at 6:09 pm

I fascinates me how history keeps repeating itself. Please try to remember when Coke changed their formula & they lost customers by the legions. There was nothing wrong with the Brach’s formula for their malted balls. Tell the bean counters to stick it, admit the screw up, & get back to making the best chocolate malted balls the world ever knew.

I bought some Brach’s malted milk balls in bulk at our grocery and immediately noticed the flavor seemed different. I thought it was me. Tried them again and
it was the same. I thought the store was putting a different brand in the container
and passing them off as Brach’s. So, I bought some at a different store, this time not
bulk but in a Brach’s bag. Same awful taste. Quit buying them for a long time. I recently tried some from a candy store and they were delicious! The bin is labeled
“original” flavor Brach’s malted milk balls. I bought 2 pounds! YUM!

LIFE IS OVER !! No more Brach’s Malted Milk Balls………………….

Hi there!, What candy store did you buy the \"Brachs Originals\" in? Can\’t find anything I like but Brachs old recipe. Would greatfully appreciate it if you would let me know? Thanks so much, spud

It\’s now Dec. 2011 and I still have not be able to find Brach’s “original recipe” Malted Milk Balls. They are my family’s favorite and I was hoping to surprise them with a few pounds for Christmas, but sadly it’s not to be. Is anybody reading these comments and are there any plans to bring back the “original” receipe. ‘d just like to know if there is any hope for us longtime fans. Even in these crazy, uncertain economic times, it sounds like many of us would be willing to pay a little extra for quality and the chance to once again taste the best chocolate malted milk balls the world has ever known!

I want to tell you that I have tasted many sour balls in my life, but these Brachs are bad. They changed the recipe and that’s not right as they are not tasty at all.

I have a hankering to enjoy the original Brach’s sour balls and hope you will change the recipe back.

  • Reply Jane Bittick June 2, 2012 at 9:58 pm

I too was longing for the old Brach’s malt balls and just the other day I was in Wal-mart and looking at the Brach’s display. Mind you I have not seen Brach’s Malted Chocolates for a couple years now and have tried everyone else’s malt balls and non compared in taste.
So, there in front of me were the small bags of Brach’s Chocolate Malts with “New” stamped in a gold design. So I grabbed 2 bags and took them home. I must say they were awesome.
I am not sure what they did, but they are the best again!!! So If you have been wanting them to come back – they are here and just as wonderful tasting as I remembered. Oh and if you search for coupons there is one online – buy 2 bags get $1.50 off – a steal.
Now the only problem I am facing is how to avoid eating so many as not to gain 10 pounds!!

  • Reply Mary McDowell July 13, 2012 at 10:06 pm

Jane is right. I also bought the “New” Malts. The package said 100% milk chocolate. They truly melt in your mouth like they did before. Yay! I’m happy again!

I am so sad to hear Brach’s change their malt balls they where the only malt balls my sister and I loved. Why can’t they just leave a good thing alone.

  • Reply Richard Casady October 30, 2014 at 11:44 am

The old Brach’s had a a classic taste. The new Brach’s taste is just common, taste like all the rest. Really!

  • Reply nancy jefferson January 15, 2015 at 11:54 pm

I have been looking for your malted milk balls in my grocery stores for years. Whenever we would visit a candy store, my husband would always get some malted milk balls for me, because I had not been able to find your malted milk balls in our local supermarkets. These were never as delicious as Brach’s! Way too heavy on the chocolate and not enough on the malted center Please please bring back your original formula. I would absolutely love to savor that wonderful taste again! And please do it ASAP–I want my delicious malted milk balls again!

  • Reply Debbie Swensen October 23, 2015 at 5:38 pm

I noticed the change with the first one I ate. It was so waxy and yes the malt is cheap and yucky. This is an old fashioned candy gone wrong. My grandparents would turn in their graves.

  • Reply Michael Ward January 3, 2016 at 6:08 pm

Quit buying the Brach’s Malted Milk Balls after they changed the chocolate. I threw away about 6 bags. Always bought in bulk. From the posts I would say was probably six years ago. A friend knew I loved them and brought me a bag a few days ago. I am happy to say the old Brach’s is back and I will start buying again.

  • Reply Donna A March 3, 2016 at 4:17 pm

This really saddened me, I only ate Brach Malt Balls, They were best out of all malted balls but the change is so disappointing. Why was it necessary to change a wonderful product. Every Easter this was my candy of choice and now they are awful. My family buys me generic or whoppers and I said they only ones I want are Brachs and now I finally get some and they are horrible. So disappointing. My husband just bought me Godiva Chicolates and all I want is the gold old Brachs Chocolate Malted Milk Balls

  • Reply Jim P October 26, 2016 at 6:01 pm

please change brachs malted milk balls back to original recipe

  • Reply Rhonda Drew January 19, 2017 at 2:09 pm

Malted Milk Balls – Cheapening up the formula again I see.
They used to be real chocolate – Pre 2007….have you changed to a compound or just to plastic? After reading 8 years of comments above (and yes I doubt CEO will never be made aware of these comments, nor care about the comments) Oh and by the way – Maple Nut Goodies need to sit 12-24 hours after applying the coating….so the center doesn’t stay the consistency of a pecan shell. I tried them just 3 weeks ago….they are terrible. You should have left production in Chattanooga or at least kept some of the production/R & D knowledge for this 70 year old product.

  • Reply Ed Miller February 24, 2018 at 4:35 pm

They changed the maple nut goodies and the bridge mix. Both for the worse

  • Reply PAULA March 18, 2018 at 11:58 pm

Always loved only brachs malts…nothing came close….now…so sad!:(
Are you really willing to lose so many customers?

  • Reply Edward Curtis August 16, 2018 at 6:20 pm

The only positve thing I can say about the change(s) to Brach’s malt balls is,
“I guess I will be losing some weight.” My son-in-law and I have been consuming about 60 lbs/year. The unwarranted changes made to a great product have not only affected us, but also the dozen, or so, friends and family who have changed from Whoppers to BRACH’S. On my recommendation to try them.
Shame on you, you have shot yourselves in the foot for no good reason.

Why why why change the formula for the best malted milk balls ever made?????? Please tell me that you will be offering the classic malted milk ball recipe also. These new ones taste like whoppers. I can get those anywhere! Very disappointed in you beach’s. Leave a good thing alone! 😑

  • Reply Lowell May 14, 2022 at 9:29 am

your malted balls were the best but now I guess I won’t need treatment to stop my addiction.

  • Reply Missy June 12, 2022 at 7:24 pm

When I was a little girl my Italian grandparents would take me for the entire summer and they would get me pistachios that were dyed red and Brachs malted milk balls. I only ate the Brock’s brand and now it’s not even close to what it used to be! They also changed the bridge mix too! It’s more money for a tiny size and the chocolate isn’t even real chocolate anymore! When old people say things were so much better when they were younger they’re not joking!

  • Reply Kristi Smith October 30, 2022 at 7:32 am

I also grew up with Brach’s malt balls, my families favorite. I never find them and not had any for years. Whopper’s are terrible, but that is all you ever find, I don’t even bother. Then I hear the product was changed? I always wondered why they, Brach’s would not compete with Whopper’s. Those who like whopper’s probably never ate Brach’s malt balls. Once I looked at ingredients, no milk chocolate in Whopper’s. Bring back Brach’s Malt Balls, change packaging, do something! I was raised in the 60’s, those who have eaten Whopper’s may not try Brach’s for a while because they don’t realize there is a difference! Please try something for Easter, maybe this candy can come back!
