I have to admit I’m usually not a fan of fruit inside my chocolates. And when I say I’m not a fan, every time I bite into a chocolate with fruit flavored filling, it usually ends up in a gross, slobbery mess inside of a napkin.

I tentatively took my first bite of the cherry cordial expecting the same sickly sweet fruity flavor of most fruit fillings, but I was quite pleasantly surprised. Within the chocolate shell, surrounding the maraschino cherry, is a sweet goopy filling. It has the same consistency of the stretchy, soft caramel in Caramello chocolates. I’m not sure what exactly the filling is, some sort of deliciously sweet, milky substance. Whatever it is, it makes this candy what it is. The milk chocolate blend, with the goopy sweetness, and the fruity cherry creates a perfect trifecta of flavors. This candy is classy too. Place them around the edges of a plate filled with fruit and you can serve that for dessert to Obama at his grand table in the white house.

You might remember Brach’s Christmas time Villa Cherries (I’ll admit that I don’t), which were discontinued in 2003. These may not be the original Villa Cherries that you all knew and loved, but they are new and improved. Whatever those Villa Cherries may have tasted like, I can tell you that these Brach’s Milk Chocolate Covered  Cherry Cordials  taste even better.

So whether you are going to the Obama’s for dinner, or it’s Christmas(/Chanukah) time,  or it’s right now, the cherry cordials’ trifecta of sweetness will leave you with your eyes closed and absentmindedly expressing your satisfaction through the universal “mmmmmm…”

Brach’s Not-So-Salty Salt Water Taffy

Do not be disgusted by the name of this candy because salt water is only in the name and not in the list of ingredients.

Though no one is sure where the name originated, the most popular story is of a man named David Bradley who had a store on the Atlantic City boardwalk in 1883.

One day a tidal wave rushed over his store soaking everything he had with salt water. The next day a girl walked into his store asking for some taffy. He sarcastically mentioned he had some “salt water taffy” which the girl bought and enjoyed.

Bradley’s mother thought that the name had a nice ring to it, so she convinced Bradley to rename his taffy to salt water taffy.  He never trademarked the name, so it was not long before other people started marketing their taffy with that new catchy name.

A man named Joeseph Fralinger started to really market this candy by selling the thin logs of taffy in boxes as Atlantic City souvenirs. Another man named Enoch James came around to add some competition to this new marketing scheme by slightly changing the recipe making the candy less sticky and by selling it as bite-sized pieces.

Fralinger and James are still two of the biggest suppliers of salt water taffy on the Jersey Shore over 100 years after the competition began.

The salt water taffy experience begins by searching through the bag for the colors that seem to correspond with a flavor you might most enjoy. You then pull the ends of the wax paper wrapper and watch the candy spin open.

A lot of times the candy sticks to the wrapper so that you have an excuse to put the wrapper in your mouth and scrape the stuck taffy off with your teeth. A lot of the taffys have mixed flavors in which you can mix together in one bite or eat separately by biting along the lines.

Salt water taffy has such a great soft and chewy consistency and such a variety of flavors that eating one more never seems like such a bad idea.

Why has the taste of Brach’s Malts changed?

Brach's Malted Milk Balls aka Brach's Malts

Brach's Malted Milk Balls aka Brach's Malts

Brach’s Malted Milk Balls aka Brach’s Malts have been a favorite of candy lovers for many years. The candy was made with delicious rich milk chocolate and had a crunchy malt center.

In recent months, the taste has changed and many think that it has not been for the better.

We contacted Customer Service at Brach’s Candy (a subsidiary of Farley’s & Sathers) and they graciously replied as follows:

“Farley’s & Sathers made an adjustment to this product formula. We will be evaluating consumer reactions and responses to the changes in this product on a weekly basis in an effort to determine consumer impact. Your feedback is important to us, and the information you provided will be considered as we review and evaluate the changes to this item…”

If sales are an indication, consumers do not like the new formula…

As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…”

We have been receiving many request for Brachs Starbrite Mints and Caramel Squares in Sugarfree and, sadly, it was reported to us by Brachs that the product has been “discontinued and the stock has been depleted”

Brachs has not announced whether they plan to reintroduce this product at a later date

Should it become available again, it will surely be added to the lineup on CandyFavorites.com
