We were thrilled to learn that a few of the ol’ Necco candy favorites will soon be back. NECCO won’t make them – alas, one of America’s most beloved candy companies shuttered its doors in 2019 – but the replacements certainly fill a void in the ever-shrinking retro candy offerings.
One of the oldest candies offered was the NECCO Wintergreen and Peppermint Lozenges. These were the stuff of lore as they were considered “indestructible calories” and purportedly accompanied intrepid explorers such as Admiral Byrd on his Antarctic expeditions. They were also used in the Second World War as they were impervious to just about anything and have long been a staple in survival kits. If only these beloved pressed Dextrose candy lozenges could speak!
Manufactured by Rito, the replacement lozenges come in three flavors – Spearmint, Peppermint, and Wintergreen. Although they are slightly less dense, the color and taste remains very close to the original. Think of them not as NECCO lozenges but as a tribute, kind of like a tribute band that pays homage to The Beatles.
