What is a buckaneer?…
According to the Laffy taffy wrapper, its an expensive corn. AHAHAHA! You can find riddles like this one on the back of every Laffy Taffy wrapper. Laffy Taffy is a product of the Willy Wonka Candy company, formerly Breaker Confections. Laffy Taffy is the modern day toffy/taffy. Each Laffy Taffy has the distinctly sweet taste of its named flavor, be it cherry, grape, watermelon, banana, fruit punch, sour apple, wild blue raspberry, or strawberry. Laffy Taffy is a simple recipe made by mixing sugar and butter and boiling it until it reaches the gooey consistency that makes the taffy as soft and chewy as it always is.
Though the Laffy Taffy is a very modern day candy, taffy has been around for centuries. Taffy was popular in the mid 1800’s not only because it was easy to make, but because it was a very social candy. Taffy pulling parties were very popular especially for young men and woman because it allowed them to get close to each other without being in a relationship. Traditionally kids would gather together, cook taffy, and after the taffy would come out of the oven girls would pair up with boys and each would pull one end of the taffy and shape it before it hardened. They would have contests to see who could make their taffy design the best. Now instead of taffy being social by means of taffy pulling parties, Wonka has created the “Laffy” Taffy which is social by means of the laughing that the “laffy” is referring to. On the back of each Laffy Taffy wrapper are two riddles which are submitted by kids across the country and “only the best” are chosen for the wrappers. Though this joke thing is a good idea, it happens to be the only flaw related to the Laffy taffy candy. The jokes on the wrapper are very rarely funny enough to provoke a laugh out of the reader. I have found that there are more jokes don’t make sense or are difficult to understand than jokes that are funny, (but that is probably because I’m nineteen and the jokes are submitted by kids less than half my age.) Laffy Taffy has the potential to make a great candy that could get modern girls and modern boys laughing together in no time, all it needs is a little joke improvement. Luckily the jokes’ lack of humor does not take away from the sweet chewiness of each mouthwatering piece of Laffy Taffy candy. Until the jokes are replaced, do your best to make it a ‘Laffy’ Taffy, but if that fails, boys grab one end, girls the other, and pull.
