Chocolate Covered Anything

chocolateraisons

As most of you can probably tell, I love chocolate. And by love I mean I would marry it if marriage to an edible object was ever made legal. There are just so manys kinds of chocolate. Dark chocolate, white chocolate, and my personal favorite, milk chocolate. But I try not to discriminate, as all chocolate is wonderful.

So it has recently come to my attention that almost anything covered in chocolate is better than the thing itself. I mean pretzels are great, but so much better when chocolate covered. Raisons are ok, but put them in chocolate and they are amazing. Even dried fruit is well, a healthy snack, but cover them in chocolate and you have yourself some dessert!

So what else could we cover in chocolate? I wonder how chocolate covered vegetables would taste. I will be the first to admit that I have a serious aversion to vegetables, but cover them in chocolate and who knows? I might actually enjoy them. My dream would be for everything and anything to be chocolate covered. Sadly, I don’t think the rest of the world agrees. So until I become President and demand that all food be covered in chocolate, I guess we candy lovers will have to settle for what we have.

My Favorite Flavor

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

One of my favorite things about candy in the whole world is something that goes on in your head, something that only works when you’re eating candy. It has to do with perception of flavor. What’s this you ask? Is the Candy Critic using big words? You better believe it.

You see I love cherries; I could eat a hundred of them. I’ll eat so many cherries that many parts of my body protests and violently disagree with the amount of cherries I’ve consumed and really let me know it. The thing is I love cherry flavored candies too. When you see me in line for a snow cone chances are I’m thinking of cherry flavor. I like cherry flavored gum; cherry lollypops are one of my favorite things. So as you can see I enjoy cherries, it’s abundantly clear.

The thing is that cherry flavored snow cone doesn’t taste at all like real cherries. With a few exceptions fake flavors don’t really match up to the real thing. More importantly we rarely expect them to, and that’s what I find wonderful. If you ate a piece of tofu that was labeled meat flavored and it didn’t taste real, you’d complain. But if you eat a cherry piece of gum and it doesn’t taste like real cherry you’re generally cool with it. Your mind will allow you to decide if that flavor is at least a good fake cherry flavor.

This is one of the things that makes candy great. Man I’m craving a snow cone now, time to bust out my Snoopy Snow Cone Machine.

Candy May Be Dandy…

Friday, March 17th, 2006

I always feel like when I write a blog for the Candyblog that I’m complaining, maybe I just use this place to vent. Well today is really going to be no different. Whenever I tell people that I’m the Candy Critic they always ask if I do chocolate too. I think chocolate is candy so, yes I do. I tell them that I also do chips and the occasional cookie as well. Then most people tell me that those aren’t candy at all. Well I’m here to tell you that these people are probably right, by definition. But I started Candy Critic because I like treats, junk food, confections, what ever you want to call them. I just picked the name Candy Critic because it rolls off the tongue well.

The only reason I mention this is because today I had an idea to write an article on the site about my favorite deserts. I’m expecting to get a lot of negative reaction about it, but deserts and candy are so similar. I mean if you eat a chocolate bar after dinner are you eating desert or are you eating candy. What if you had a slice of cake in the middle of the afternoon because you just wanted it, it’s not technically desert then.

I’m not really sure where I’m going with this particular entry today. I’m either just trying to promote my new upcoming article or trying to justify eating a bunch of deserts. You tell me.

Snack for a Sunny Day

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Growing up I always had a favorite snack for warm sunny days. Given the good weather these last few days I figured I’d share my favorite sunny day snack with you all before it gets cold again! For this snack you will need a lot of ingredients, but the most important ingredient of all is a package of gummy worms.

Yes that’s right! Gummy worms. The creation you will be making is called Dirt Pie With Worms. Doesn’t that sound delightful?? Believe me when I tell you it is. Of course its not real dirt. It’s Oreo cookies, pudding, and cool whip! It’s messy and loaded with sugar but it’s the best thing you’ll ever taste on a sunny day. So here is one of many recipes for dirt pie for you all to enjoy!

Gummy Worms

Dirt Pie With Worms
From cooks.com

2 to 3 qt. flower pot
1 dirt trowel
1 bunch plastic flowers
1 pkg. gummy worms
2 pkg. vanilla pudding
2 lb. Oreo cookies
3 1/2 c. milk
8 oz. cream cheese
12 oz. Cool Whip
1 1/2 c. confectionery sugar
3/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix the pudding and milk, then whip in the cream cheese, sugar, butter and vanilla. When mixed, fold in the Cool Whip. Crumble cookies in processor. In the flower pot, put piece of foil in bottom to block holes. Then put a layer of cookies, then pudding and worms. Repeat until all the ingredients are used. Top layer must be cookies. Put bunch of flowers into pot. Serve with the trowel. Oreo cookies can be substituted for sugar cookies; make a sand pie, you can use a pail and shovel.

So there you have it candy lovers! The best sunny day snack for people of all ages! Yes even adults find joy in sucking the pudding off of a gooey gummy worm before tossing it into their mouth! So enjoy and don’t forget the napkins!

Until next time, this is Kandy K……stay sweet!
