I like your sister better….

Friday, October 28th, 2005

Ok we’ve all had Butterfingers before. Maybe at Halloween, or from a store, or perhaps from a vending machine. But whatever the case, I know you’ve all had one. Unless you are allergic to peanut butter, in which case, don’t eat one. Now I have always enjoyed Butterfingers. They are tasty! Chocolate and peanut butter~ yum! But I am here to tell you that I have discovered something better. *GASP* Yes, better than the Butterfinger. But it is still related to the Butterfinger. In fact, I would call them sisters!

I saw it for the first time yesterday on my dinner break at the Children’s Hospital. I was on my way out of the cafeteria, when I saw it. It was staring at me through the glass of the vending machine. It seemed to be calling to me. So I bought it. The Butterfinger Crisp. You get all the same chocolate and peanut buttery goodness, but it’s so much easier to bite into! Regular Butterfingers have always been a bit difficult to bite, but the Butterfinger crisp solves that problem! And of course you get that extra crisp!

Sadly, the joy ends too soon. They need to make never ending Butterfinger Crisp bars. I’ll work on that and get back to you.

Until next time, this is Kandy K … stay sweet!

A little advice from Chris at Candycritic.org

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Are you bored of candy? Are you saying to yourself “man, I wish I could try something new?” Well you my friend are just not looking hard enough. Since starting candycritic.org I’ve learned something very valuable. There are more kinds of candy in this world than any one person could ever try. Trust me, that’s pretty much the point of Candy Critic, and I look at candy shelves, and the e-mails I receive and realize that I’ve only cracked the top of this iceberg.

So you want to try something new do you? I suggest starting in your neighborhood, look around for small grocery stores from far off places.
People like treats and when they open a store carrying foods from other lands often candy is included. If you have no such stores in your town, the Internet is a great resource too.

The next step is to be a little brave, can’t read the package, go for it anyways. I always figure that there are a bunch of kids somewhere in the world enjoying what ever might be in that package with the little squiggles on it so it’s got to be good enough for me. I’ll tell you now, you’ll eat a few things that might not sit well with you, but when you bite into a new treat that taste great you’ll thank me.

Complain to candy companies. Yes I said it, if you find that candy companies aren’t living up to their creative possibilities call, write, or e-mail. Tell them you want something new, don’t worry either, it’s not up to you to figure out what they should make, people make good money trying to find the next big treat. If you’re going to complain also be sure to compliment when appropriate. If you try something new that blows your mind tell them. Often treats are put out as a test market but if people really like them then they’ll stick around, but if they don’t think they’re doing well they’ll pull it and I’ve lost many a great treat because of this.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t just eat something sweet for the sugar go for the adventure too.

Who is the Candy Critic? Well I’m a guy that decided on a little web page called Beware the Cheese, to indulge my sweet tooth and write little reviews all about strange candies I find all around me. It started out simple enough and I figured why not. Then as that section of the page became more and more elaborate people started to take notice. I figured hey why not make it something on it’s own, by this time I had already started writing little articles and collections about candy as well as the reviews.

Some years went by and I decided, Candy Critic should go out on it’s own.
Since then the site has just continued to get bigger and bigger. My only fear is how big it might get, so my daily struggle is to make sure that the basics principles of the this site are always maintained, and they are simple. Enjoy candy for what it is, fun.

Holiday Spirit

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

In honor of this mornings snow flurries, I felt the need to post about my favorite Christmas holiday candy. Much like candy corn reminds me of Halloween, this candy always brings me into the Christmas spirit! What is white, red, and sticky all over?

CANDY CANES!!! Christmas is without a doubt my favorite holiday. I love the spirit of it all. So much love all around (ok not counting the family get togethers!). But candy canes are what really capture the spirit of Christmas. When I think about Christmas, I think about little kids running around with candy canes in their mouths. I think about Christmas trees decorating with hanging candy canes. I see my stocking on Christmas morning filled with all different kinds of candy canes.

Candy canes are the perfect gift too! Who doesn’t love candy canes? I remember back in high school when I wanted to get something for EVERYONE. I used to buy a bunch of those tiny red stockings, and then buy a few packs of mini candy canes, and maybe some of those holiday Hershey kisses. I’d fill each stocking to the brim and write names on the outside of the stocking. It was a great present, and it wasn’t expensive either! Which is always good for students (lets face it, most of us are poor!).

Around the Christmas holiday, the halls of my high school were always filled with people eating candy canes. The sweet peppermint taste was always lingering in the hallway. Whenever I eat a candy cane, I’m reminded of Christmas memories from the past. This year will be no different. Nor will the year after. Candy canes will always represent the holiday spirit to me. And there is nothing in this world better than the holiday spirit!

Birthdays and Chocolate

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Today I went to the craziest first birthday party that I’ve ever seen. There were tons of people and food. And there were two birthday cakes. Yes, two! The first was a big cake that had a picture of beautiful baby Jordan on it. The second one was a smash cake, and it was all for Jordan. He sat in his high chair in front of this cake and dug in with his little fingers. Naturally, not all of the icing and cake made it into little Jordan’s mouth. In fact, a lot of it was on his face, in his hair, and on the wall behind him! But hey, it’s his party; he can fling cake if he wants to!

A good time was had by all who attended. On the way out the door, everyone got to grab a chocolate Hershey bar! But these Hershey bar’s had a special wrapping on them. The front says “Happy 1st Birthday Jordan!” next to a picture of a rubber duck (the party theme). The back has all kinds of cute little facts, such as the ingredients: Fun, laughter, games, and good times! I saved my wrapper, and immediately ate the chocolate bar. (No worries, I have three more in the fridge!). Chocolate is delectable my friends. But I’m sure you all know that.

As a parting shot, I wish Jordan a very happy first birthday!

Love/Hate Relationships

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

You’ve all been there. That person that you just want to kill sometimes, but you still love them. Ok well I’m applying this concept to candy. Not just any candy. I’m talking about THE candy. You see this candy and the first thought in your head is Halloween. With Halloween fast approaching, I thought this would be a good topic to discuss. So without further ado (drum roll please)…

Candy Corn!!! Yes I’m talking about the tiny yellow, orange, and white candies. I love them, I really do. Not only are they yummy, but they really put you in the Halloween spirit! I used to love getting little packages of candy corn when I would go trick or treating as a child (ok and as a teenager).

But as much as I love candy corn, there are times, like in those love/hate relationships that I can’t stand them. If you’ve ever had slightly stale candy corn, you know what I’m talking about. The sweetness is gone, and bitterness fills you up (much like those relationships!). However, unlike relationships, with candy corn, this can be avoided. Simply, don’t let your candy corn go stale! And if you are the one handing them out to the kids on Halloween, make sure they are not from last years stash. Save the kids from the bitter candy corn. The world will be a better place.

To Wax or Not to Wax

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

That is the question. And no I’m not talking about wax strips, I’m talking about wax lips and wax fangs. Always a favorite for kids around halloween. I, myself, have had both in the past. However, I’m not 100% sure how I feel about them. Yes of course they are always fun to wear and make faces with. I particularly enjoyed trying to kiss people with the big wax lips as a child. The fangs were even better in my opinion for halloween. The finishing touch on a nice vampire costume. Of course the trick was not to eat your fangs before the night was over.

But there was one thing that I didn’t love about wax lips and fangs. The whole eating them part wasn’t my favorite. I don’t think they taste bad, but I don’t think they taste good either. They are just there, not really tasting like anything. Personally I think they just needed more sugar. Of course this could just be my own tastebuds.

So for all of you out there who have eaten wax lips or fangs in the past, I want to hear your opinion! Comment or e-mail me at kandyk@candyfavorites.com!

Until next time, this is Kandy K……..stay sweet!

What to see what I’m talking about? Wax Lips Wax Fangs

What Kind of Candy Are You?

Snickers

Nutty and gooey – you always satisfy.

Hmm, so I’m a Snickers. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I mean sure, I’m a bit nutty, and I would hope that I always satisfy (minds out of the gutter people!) but gooey? Does ANYONE want to be gooey?? It’s a fun little quiz though. So take it, then comment and share what kind of candy YOU are!

An Affair to Remember

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

I was watching my favorite TV show, Lost, the other day. In the short version, a plane crashes on a mysterious island and strands about 48 survivors with no food. After more than a month on the island, the female lead finds an underground room that is filled with food. She goes straight for a chocolate bar. As I watched that I thought, I would totally do the same thing! What is it about chocolate that makes women go weak in the knees?

I asked a few people what they thought. Here is what they had to say!

“It makes us happy!!!” Female, USA

“I’ve always felt chocolate cares when no one else does. It makes me feel loved. If someone says chocolate, I think love.” Female, Sweden

And I of course got a male perspective on the issue too.

“Well it’s apparently due to some kind of chemical reaction released during chocolate-eating having a similar pleasing effect as certain endorphins or whatever being released during sexual activity. But that could just be an urban myth.” Male, UK

Well, I did some research and this is what I found out. One of the key ingredients in chocolate is phenylethylamine (PEA) also know as the “love-chemical”. This induces feelings of attraction, excitement, giddiness, apprehension and euphoria. However, most of the PEA in chocolate is metabolized before it hits the central nervous system.
So maybe it’s not PEA. Maybe its society telling us we should love chocolate. Or maybe chocolate is just that wonderful. Whatever it is, the love affair between women and chocolate is bound to continue until the day the world ends. But hey, at least the love affair is with chocolate and not another man, right?

Until next time, this is Kandy K…stay sweet!!

Kinky Kandies

Kinky Kandies

That’s right! A whole line of edible bras, g-strings, and garter belts! What could be better to sweeten (literally) things up in the bedroom? Or perhaps as just a gag gift for one of your friends? The possibilities are endless! I decided to poll my friends on the subject. I asked if anyone had used the product with their partner, or if people had purchased them for gag gifts. The response was overwhelming! Within minutes I had 15 people tell me that they had given or received them as gag gifts. In one particularly interesting anecdote, a girl from Texas said her and her friends stuffed a bunch of candy bras, handcuffs, and other kinky items into a pinata for a friends 18th birthday. Everyone loved it, although, apparently handcuffs don’t fly too well out of a pinata (note to self).

I also asked people if they would consider using such items in the bedroom. Most people asked replied that they would consider using them. Some of the guys had more interesting views on the subject. One said he would use them, but wouldn’t be the one to introduce them in the bedroom. So ladies, it may be up to you! An early birthday present for him that you can enjoy too!

Well candy lovers, even after polling my friends, I would still like to hear more feedback.

Until next time this is Kandy K…stay sweet!
