Life Savers are one of the great American candies, were introduced by a chocolate maker named Clarence Crane in 1912

His original purpose was to create a candy that would not melt as an alternative to chocolate during the summer

Their original name, Cranes Peppermint Life Savers, came from the fact that the miniature candies resembled Life Preservers which were becoming standard on boats after the Titanic sunk

The first flavor was Pep-O-Mint and Lifesavers were the first candy to be packaged in a tin foil outer wrapper in order to preserve freshness
