There has been much speculation as to where the name came from but, as lore has it, it was caused by a miscommunication

The original name was supposed to read “Black Rose” but the printer misinterpreted and printed the label as “Crows”

Crows faded in and out of the market and it wasn't until 1972 that it was acquired by Tootsie Roll Industries

Over a hundred and fifteen year have passed but the classic Licorice Flavored Black Gumdrops remain one of the oldest, and beloved, retro candies
