When first introduced, they were distributed on a strictly seasonal basis because preservatives had not yet been invented and it wasn't until the late 1940's, with the advent of plastic packaging, that they became available year round

In the early 1960's, the President of General Mills, John Holahan, came up with a brilliant idea to include the remnants of the manufacturing process into taste enhancements for cereal and thus the iconic American Breakfast Cereal, Lucky Charms, was born

The original Charms were called “Marbits” which was an amalgamation of the words Marshmallow and Bits
